    Overview The Integrated Masters in Biomedical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico , coordinated by the Bioengineering Department of IST, works in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon and receives contributions from most other IST departments.It is therefore a strongly interdisciplinary course that addresses typical topics of medicine and biology, such as Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in conjunction with the traditional subjects of engineering and computer science such as Biomaterials Science, Medical Imaging and Machine Learning.The typical problems addressed in this course are as varied and comprehensive as cell movement, nervous system physiology and how its electrical and metabolic activity can be observed and measured, mechanisms of muscle contraction, biocompatibility of materials and how they can be used in implant design, genetic engineering and tissue regeneration, reconstruction of medical and biological imaging, paradigm design and data analysis in neurosciences and the manipulation of sensitive medical data in databases used in management of hospital units and in decision support problems.ObjectivesThe teaching of Biomedical Engineering (EBM) at IST aims to give a prominent formation and preparation for the opportunities that in the XXI century will be opened to investments in sciences and technologies of health and life. The connection between Engineering and Medicine promoted by the Biomedical Engineering training at IST allows to integrate fundamental aspects and concrete applications of engineering in investigation, diagnosis and therapy of the medical sciences. Since problem solving in Biomedical Engineering often requires skills based on multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary knowledge between different disciplines, the teaching of Biomedical Engineering at IST provides rigorous training in Mathematics, Computing, Physics and Chemistry, and at the same time in Biology, Biochemistry, Medicine and Engineering.EmploymentBiomedical engineers can work in universities, industry, hospitals and government agencies regulating health systems. In these latter institutions they generally have a coordinating or interface function between the fields of engineering and medicine. They are responsible for quality testing and establish safety and evaluation criteria. They perform consulting functions for the selection and use of medical equipment, and supervise their performance and maintenance. They can also customize and develop equipment for health care and research.In this scope, its very important role in the operation of medical imaging equipment in clinics and hospitals, namely in magnetic resonance imaging, computer tomography and nuclear imaging, stands out.
    The Biomedical Engineering (EBM) programme from Instituto Superior Técnico is an engineering area where the theoretical and experimental tools of engineering are used to analyze and solve the complex problems of health, with emphasis on applications in medicine, biology, psychology and even social Sciences.
