Overview Facts about this program :The Physics and Mathematics at University of Granada course is interdisciplinary in nature and allows students to become versatile thinkers and problem-solvers. One of the aims of this masters is to equip you with the training required to make positive contributions to science. The current interplay between the disciplines of mathematics and physics is giving rise to a host of exciting new research areas within the field of science, especially when they are combined with disciplines such as ecology, mathematical engineering, astronomy, economics, medicine, biology, and ICT. The affinities between the two disciplines, and the opportunities seized upon in light of these affinities, has led to impressive outcomes throughout history, and given rise to new areas of research. Such was the case in the 1920s and 1930s with the immense headway made in the field of quantum mechanics by figures such as Einstein, Von Neumann, Dirac, Schrödinger, Bohr, and Heisenberg. The same can be said of the current pioneering research being carried out by combining physics and mathematics, and applying them to biology and medicine (areas examined on our course). As a student on our programme, you will have the chance to study a wide range of subjects, such as; Numerical Analysis of PDE and Visualisation, Pattern Formation and Developmental Biology, Geometry of Relativistic Spacetimes, High-Energy Astrophysics, Particle Physics Beyond the Standard Model, and Colour Science and Technology, to mention just a few (it is important to note that this is not a comprehensive list of course subjects and modules: please consult the programme homepage below for a comprehensive and fully up-dated list of course subjects and modules). The mathematics and physics departments at the UGR are among the most renowned in Spain and in Europe. Indeed, the UGR is currently ranked among the top 101-150 universities in the world in mathematics (Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities or ARWU 2015). Our graduates enjoy a high employability rate, and go on to work in diverse areas, such as teaching, the biotechnology industry, the ICT industry, banking, finance, consultancy firms, education, full-time research, public administration and the industrial sector. Those who acquire skills in mathematics and physics, and learn how to combine them effectively, are highly valued in contemporary society, given their versatility and excellent analytical and quantitative skills, their ability for logical reasoning, flexible and abstract thinking and, above all, their ability for problem solving. It is an exciting and challenging discipline that continues to develop and evolve, and its application to solve real-world problems can be hugely satisfying.
