    Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) [22R]


    This program of study is provided for students who intend to embark on a career in the maritime industry as Marine Engineer Officers on commercial vessels. It provides the knowledge and skills required to safely manage, facilitate, and undertake operation and maintenance linked to the shipboard marine engineering systems. Course content includes marine engineering and systems, vessel structure and operations, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation, marine survey and shipboard safety. The program is designed to integrate with professional short courses and training at sea so that successful students will not only obtain an Advanced Diploma or bachelor degree but also an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Certificate of Competency. The program is fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 2010 as amended. (The amendment took place in Manila in 2010)

    Course Coordinator:

    The Bachelor of Maritime Engineering (Specialisation) (Honours) programme is a distinctive Maritime Engineering degree and the only of its kind in the Southern hemisphere. The four-year programme is accredited by Engineers Australia and is aligned with the needs of industry, opening up a world of possible careers for professionally qualified maritime engineers who can provide innovative and creative solutions within the Australian and international maritime industry. The degree has a strong practical approach using AMC's specialist facilities. Within the first two years of study, compulsory units in the degree cover the fundamental aspects of maritime engineering, after which students specialise in one of the following:

    • naval architecture, focusing on the design and construction of vessels within the shipping, high-speed, offshore, military, underwater and recreational industries;
    • ocean engineering, focusing on the design of offshore structures, subsea and coastal installations for sustainable development in the maritime environment; or
    • marine and offshore engineering, focusing on the design, deployment, commissioning and management of mechanical and mechanical-electrical systems associated with the shipping, marine and offshore oil and gas industries.

    The final year of the program at AQF8 consists of capstone projects such as research project and design project. The integration of experiential learning, application of authentic real-world learning to problem solving and professional skills will enable students to apply to these capstone honours projects.


    Entry Requirements

    All international students will need to meet the minimum English Language Requirements, University General Entry Requirements and any course specific requirements such as pre-requisite subjects, if applicable.

    English Language Requirements

    This degree requires an IELTS (Academic) of 5.5, with no individual band less than 5.0, or a PTE Academic score of 43, with no score lower than 36 or equivalent.

    For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided.     General Entry Requirements

    Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a 12th year of education in Australia.

    We anticipate the lowest ATAR that will receive an offer for this course in 2022 will be 65.

    Please review the equivalent undergraduate entry requirements to see the minimum requirement relevant to your country.

    You can also meet the General Entry Requirement for this course with the following qualifications or prior studies:

    • Completion of an equivalent AQF Certificate IV or above
    • Complete or incomplete (minimum 25 credit points) of previous tertiary study at Bachelor level or higher

    If you do not meet the minimum requirements, we offer the Foundation Studies Program.

    Course Specific Requirements

    The following course specific requirements must be met to be eligible to study this degree.

    To be an eligible for an offer, you must have studies or experience equivalent to a satisfactory achievement in the following Tasmanian Senior Secondary subjects:

    • Mathematics General (MTG315115) or equivalent, and
    • Physical Sciences (PSC315109) or equivalent (equivalency includes CHM415115 Chemistry OR PHY415115 Physics)

    If you have not met a required pre-requisite, you will need to complete a University of Tasmania Foundation Studies Program before you start your course.

    English Program Requirements

    • All methods of meeting University of Tasmania English language requirements have a validity period of 2 years unless involving a country specific qualification as listed below.
    • Each course offered by the University of Tasmania has a minimum English language requirement for entry as listed below. Applicants must also meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
    • Applicants who qualify from a University of Tasmania program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency's English language registration standard.
    • In exceptional circumstances or cases not covered by the categories outlined below, multiple forms of evidence may be considered on a case by case basis by the Executive Director, Student Operations in consultation with the Director, Academic Quality and Standards.
    • The University reserves the right to require that any applicant be required to undergo a test of English language.


    The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) is the recognised pathway to becoming an AMSA certified marine engineering officer. This degree provides additional knowledge and skills that will be of benefit to students seeking a career at sea. The degree will also equip professional engineering officers with the additional knowledge and skills that they are likely to require to take up senior shore-based professional positions such as:

    • Governmental or intergovernmental regulators and organisations such as AMSA, EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency), IMO (International Maritime Organization)
    • Senior position in a shipyard
    • Technical manager in a shipping company
    • Marine superintendent or safety manager in a shipping company
    • Product, R&D, sales and service managers in companies manufacturing marine engines and equipment.
    • Surveyor in a Classification Society
    • Marine Surveyor with a Port State Control  authority such as AMSA
    • Work in Marine insurance companies
    • Maritime Education and Training, research and teaching positions

    Professional Recognition

    The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) is approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for eligibility towards the following Certificates of Competency: Engineer Watchkeeper (Trade Entrants).
