The aerospace engineering graduate programme focuses on teaching and research in analytical, computational, and experimental methods in the areas of aerothermo-dynamics and fluid mechanics; structures and materials; flight and orbital mechanics; and guidance and control. The student may concentrate in any of these four areas. The objectives of the programme are to enable the student to attain a deeper understanding of aerospace engineering fundamentals, a knowledge of recent developments, and the ability as a master's degree student to participate in research and as a doctoral degree student to conduct individual research. The goals are accomplished through coursework, seminars, and active research programmes. The prerequisite for graduate study in aerospace engineering is a bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace engineering or in a related field of engineering (a scientific preparation programme may be necessary for students with non-aerospace engineering degrees).
The origin of the Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Main Scientific Branch is the Engineering/Architecture Graduate Programme in Aerospace which was opened in 1976 with the beginning of the 4-year engineering education in our university. This programme was carried out by the academicians of Aeronautical Department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. ITU Graduate School of Science and Technology was founded in 1982 and the graduate programme was continued as "Aeronautical Engineering Programme" of the Institute after Aeronautical Engineering Department joined with the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics. At the same time the Space Science and Technology Programme was initiated by the academicians of Space Science and Technology Department, which was later changed to "Space Engineering Programme." These programmes were combined as "Multidisciplinary Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Programme" in 2003.
The combined programme has accepted 200 students within the last four years (2007-2011).
