Department of Child Development was established at 1968 by the name of "Department of Child Development and Education" as a department of School of Home Economics which is part of Faculty of Health Sciences at Hacettepe University. Since 1976, special education studies have been started and Special Education Department was established. "Child Development and Education Department", continued its efforts as "Department of Child Development and Education" and "Special Education Department" in two areas. Child Development and Education Department, is in Turkey in their field "first" and in the field of Special Education Department of the "third" main discipline. The name of the Department of Child Development and Education was in 1987, "Children's Health and Education", in 1996, the name become "Child Development and Education". The Department since 2007 restructured as "Department of Child Development under the Faculty of Health Sciences.The mission of the Department of Child Development is to graduate Child Developmentalists providing services to the children, families, educators and the communities with its theoretical and practical education programs for supporting all of the developmental areas (mental, language, motor, self-help, socio-emotional) of different groups of children between 0 to 18 years of age such as normally developing children, children with special needs, children with the need of protection (institutionalized, working, immigrant and delinquent children) and hospitalized children.Undergraduate program`s of the department of child development was renewed in line with the Bologna process within the scope of this mission. By creating a new program, conducted a needs analysis based on the opinions of graduates and students, stakeholders, non-governmental organizations. Taking into account needs analysis, was established the qualifications of program, and renewed the program.

Child Development Undergraduate Program take their students to provide vocational education and training from high school and vocational high schools with her Undergraduate Placement Exam scores. The language of instruction is Turkish. English preparatory class is optional.
