Overview Transport Systems are a central component of a country's economy, since they enable the mobility of people and goods, allowing travel and transactions that sustain all economic and social activity. Together, these systems also include a set of services and infrastructures that constitute an intangible and material heritage of great significance for any country. This heritage in itself supports and serves as a reference to the internationalization of transport companies, but also to other sectors such as the construction of their respective infrastructures, which becomes crucial in a time of globalization of activities.The Master in Engineering and Systems Transportation at Instituto Superior Técnico is structured to be a training of excellence, taking advantage of the existing relations between the IST and the industrial fabric of the sector, as well as the relationship with the main European schools where advanced teaching in Transportation is offered, such as those that are gathered in the TRANSPORTNET network (www.transportnet.org) of which IST was founder and presided during the first years of its existence. ObjectivesThe aim of the MEST is to provide a solid preparation in Transport Systems, allowing analysis of problems and the formulation of responses to them when it comes to the definition of services or infrastructures, socio-economic and environmental constraints to their conceptions, consideration of search for users and efficient process management. The aim is to provide a world-class reference offering by providing a teaching program that places its pupils before highly qualified teachers and pedagogical capacity, supported by carefully crafted learning materials and establishing a relationship with large, either through the curricular units, or through lectures delivered by those responsible for these challenges in companies.The MEST aims to provide students with the following knowledge, skills and aptitudes:Understand restrictions on the design of the transport system in terms of the definition of services and infrastructures relating to externalities such as environmental impact, organic aspects such as charging or supporting structure of vehicles or consideration of demand by potential users, allowing the student to acquire the necessary knowledge to intervene in the whole life cycle of a transportation system, from conception to operation, through the construction and conservation of infrastructures and the implementation of services essential to the operation.Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as analyze and interpret data, in order to assess current situations and formulate solutions and interventions for complex problems that are placed in transport services and infrastructures.EmploymentPublic or private administration of transport systems;Construction companies of transport infrastructures;Consultancy companies in transport systems;Research in transport systems.

The Master in Engineering and Systems Transportation at Instituto Superior Técnico intends to respond to a recognized need for training in transportation systems at a national level more geared towards rehabilitation, but also because the markets where the internationalization of Portuguese civil engineering are having and will have relevant investments in the sector.

1If you have completed an undergraduate or an integrated masters (1st study cycle) at Instituto Superior Técnico, even though with no scientific consistency with the course of the 2nd study cycle that you wish to apply to;Hold an undergraduate degree (1st study cycle) in the field of Science and Technology (except in the case of the 2nd study cycle in Architecture which requires a 1st study cycle programme in Architecture);Hold either an academic, scientific or professional curriculum verifying the capability to complete the master’s programme you are applying to.
