Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies (SCG002.1)

    About

The Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies (GDLS) is a post-graduate law program designed for those who have already completed or are close to completing a bachelor's degree in another discipline. It will allow professionals who have already completed a degree in another discipline to try post-graduate legal studies and enables them to transition into the UC Juris Doctor (JD). Students graduating from a GDLS will be able to:
    • Demonstrate foundational legal knowledge and skills at post-graduate level, enhancing their employment opportunities. The units in the GDLS are also foundational units in the JD.
    • Develop practical legal problem-solving and problem prevention skills.
    • Ground their legal education in the broader social, historical and economic context and become socially responsible and ethical professionals.
    • Develop their advocacy abilities and a wide range of professional legal skills.
    • Through UC's close connections with industry, the legal profession and community partners, students will have the opportunity to build their professional network and apply their talents in the real world by opportunities by completing a law internship or research project.
Students can also tailor their individual program of study by selecting from a variety of electives from different areas of law with a particular focus on technology, innovation and dispute resolution.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

When assessing postgraduate applications, we’ll look at your previous qualifications and any professional experience you have in the workforce.

Some courses have additional criteria, such as previous learning in a specific study area, completion of a questionnaire or interview, or work experience within the field.

Each course will specify what the entry requirements are and any additional documents of evidence you might need to provide when putting your application together.

You can find the specific entry requirements for a course on the course details page.

    Recognised qualifications

Most admissions for coursework degrees are granted based on the successful completion of a bachelor’s degree, however your academic performance or grades may also be taken into consideration for some postgraduate courses.

You can still apply for certain postgraduate courses even if you haven’t completed an undergraduate degree.

We’ll consider non-tertiary qualifications plus paid work experience or professional memberships as the equivalent to a bachelor’s degree for postgraduate entry if you have:

    • completed an Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree plus 4 years full-time paid work experience at managerial or professional level or a professional membership
    • completed a Diploma plus 8 years full-time paid work experience at managerial or professional level or a professional membership
    • completed Year 12 or a Certificate IV plus 10 years full-time paid work experience at managerial or professional level or a professional membership.

Professional memberships must be of an appropriate, recognised professional body in one of the following fields: pharmacy, accounting, speech therapy, urban and regional planning, occupational therapy, actuarial studies, physiotherapy, engineering, law or surveying.
