    The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is 26-week full-time professional and practical training course conducted by the Centre for Legal Studies in Hobart. The course runs from February to July each year. It prepares law graduates for the conduct of legal practice.     Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Admission to most postgraduate coursework courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer.

    English Language Requirements

    For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided.     Course Specific Requirements

    Applicants need to have EITHER:

    successfully completed an Australian academic qualification in law leading to admission to the legal profession, OR

    have no more than 2 academic subjects to complete:

    (i) where none of the outstanding subjects is one of the academic areas of knowledge referred to in Schedule 1 of the Legal Profession (Board of Legal Education) Rules 2010 (as amended by the Legal Profession (Board of Legal Education) Amendment Rules 2014); and

    (ii) for which the applicant must be enrolled while undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice; and

    (iii) the applicant has received the prior permission of the Board of Legal Education to commence the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

    1A If the applicant has completed their academic qualifications in law at a time that will be more than five years before their application to the Board of Legal Education for assessment of their academic qualifications for the purposes of admission, the applicant must, before entry to the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, apply for assessment of their academic qualifications under rule 4(3) of the Legal Profession (Board of Legal Education) Rules 2010 (as amended by the Legal Profession (Board of Legal Education) Amendment Rules 2014), and receive the Board's approval;

    • Refer to Legal Profession (Board of Legal Education) Rules 2021.

    English Program Requirements

    • All methods of meeting University of Tasmania English language requirements have a validity period of 2 years unless involving a country specific qualification as listed below.
    • Each course offered by the University of Tasmania has a minimum English language requirement for entry as listed below. Applicants must also meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
    • Applicants who qualify from a University of Tasmania program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency's English language registration standard.
    • In exceptional circumstances or cases not covered by the categories outlined below, multiple forms of evidence may be considered on a case by case basis by the Executive Director, Student Operations in consultation with the Director, Academic Quality and Standards.
    • The University reserves the right to require that any applicant be required to undergo a test of English language.

    Successful completion of the course is normal prerequisite for admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
