About

Undertake a PhD in Health Emergencies and Health Security

Help society to prepare, respond and recover from natural and manmade hazards and disruptive events that produce new challenges for our health sector.

Worldwide, health emergencies, including disaster events, novel disease outbreaks and deliberate attacks on communities, are challenging the capacity and capability of our health systems. Health security is an increasingly important focus for those charged with protecting our communities from the impact of these natural and man-made threats to health.

A PhD provides the opportunity to deepen specialised/advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in disaster health management and/or health security, to apply these in a range of situations, and to contribute to the current and future development responses to health emergencies globally.

The study program includes a mixture of compulsory and elective topics, as well as individual research.

Topics cover areas such as public policy, governance and public policy, economics and public policy and a professional research project.

Some electives can be incorporated from other graduate programs including public sector management, international relations, international business, environmental management, social work, public health and educational management.

Practical experience

Masters students have the opportunity to undertake an internship. A Flinders' internship helps you graduate work-ready and provides experience directly related to a specialist area in your degree.

Requirements

Entry Requirements

Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification or hold a the Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Education or closely related qualification. In addition, applicants must also have no less than two years’ work experience in an organisation.

English Program Requirements

If you don’t meet our English language entry requirements and need to improve your English language proficiency, you can do so through our approved English Language Instruction Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) providers. This means that you can attend the required English language tuition at approved ELICOS providers and gain direct entry into university without an IELTS or TOEFL test.
