    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Available places will be offered to qualified applicants based on merit. Admission to candidature requires:

    • a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification; and
    • completion of the teaching area specialisation requirements specified by the Faculty; and
    • completion of any additional qualifying courses prescribed by the Faculty.
    • Applicants who are one unit of study (equivalent to one quarter of a semester of full-time study or 0.125 EFTSL) short of meeting the prerequisites for admission to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) may be given special permission to study the deficient unit in another faculty or institution during their first semester while undertaking their Master of Teaching.

English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English. In exceptional circumstances, the Dean may admit applicants without these qualifications who in the opinion of the Faculty have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE)

The requirement to complete the LANTITE applies to all students enrolled in the BEd (Primary); BEd (Health and PE); BEd (Secondary:Humanities and Social Sciences)/BA; BEd (Secondary: Maths)/BSc; BEd (Secondary: Science)/BSc; and all Master of Teaching programs except MTeach (Early Childhood).

Information about LANTITE for students commencing their studies in 2017 and beyond will be required to have successfully completed testing as follows: For the MTeach program, testing must be completed before the second year of candidature, that is, during the first year of the program.

    Register to take the LANTITE.

For information about teacher-accreditation requirements in NSW, including the testing, visit the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

Inherent requirements for programs in secondary education

To assist students to make informed choices about their study, the Sydney School of Education and Social Work has identified inherent requirements for coursework-award courses in Secondary Education. In order to successfully complete such a course, students must possess these qualities and skills (PDF).

    Teaching area prerequisites

Applicants need to be able to demonstrate a record of studies in their undergraduate degree(s) that satisfies the specific prerequisite requirements of the subjects they wish to teach. These prerequisites are determined by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and are set out in the table below. In general, you must have completed three years' full-time undergraduate study in the subject you intend to be your Major/1st Teaching Area and two years' full-time undergraduate study in the subject you intend to be your Minor/2nd Teaching Area.

If you undertake a Major Teaching Area as well as a Minor Teaching Area, this is known as undertaking a ‘single method’ study of both areas. MTeach (Secondary) students have the option of ’double method’ study in four areas: languages, mathematics, music and science. If you're enrolled in ‘double method’ study, you won't be required to qualify in a Minor Teaching Area.

Applicants for double-method programs (languages, mathematics, music or science) must satisfy the prerequisites listed in the column ‘Major Teaching Area’. Applicants for single-method programs must – as a minimum – be able to satisfy the prerequisites to study one subject as a Major Teaching Area as well as the prerequisites to study a second subject as a Minor Teaching Area.

The teaching areas offered by the school are reviewed annually and insufficient enrolments will lead to cancellation.

You might want to bookmark the course page, as you'll be referring back to it as you prepare your application.

    Inherent requirements

When choosing a course, you should see if it has any inherent requirements (this will be noted on the course page). These usually apply for courses that are preparing you for a career where you will be working closely with people or animals.

    2. Check your eligibility

For all courses, you will need to demonstrate that you:

    • meet our English language requirements. If you have completed a recognised English language test, the required score can be found on the right hand side of the course page (found in step 1).

For all undergraduate courses, you will need to demonstrate that you:

For all postgraduate courses, you will need to demonstrate that you:

Applicants from the People's Republic of China may be required to provide a China Higher Education Student Information and Career Center (CHESICC) verification of their academic documents.

If you are applying for a student visa, the University reserves the right to request additional information regarding the government's genuine temporary entrant requirement. This may be requested after your application is submitted, and could include an additional application form seeking clarification about your personal circumstances and/or an interview.

    4. Check your finances

You should also research financial support options that may be available to you. We have a wide range of scholarships available for international students, and some countries also provide education loans to their citizens.

    5. Submit your application

    Apply directly

Most international students can apply directly to the University. To do so, select the 'Apply now' button on your course page to commence your application, and follow the prompts.

This short video provides an overview of the application form. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our regional experts, who can provide personalised advice.
