About Master of Sustainable Smart Cities

The Master's program in (Smart Sustainable Cities) was established in the Department of Architecture at the University of Petra in 2024. It is the first program of its kind at the level of public and private Jordanian universities, and the first master's program in architecture departments at the level of Jordanian private universities.

Rooted in the University of Petra's vision, this program is a testament to our commitment to urban development. We aim to enhance cities' resilience to urban challenges, embrace digital and technological advancements, and implement smart solutions for sustainable development. Through scientific research, specialist training, and quality service provision, we strive to make a significant impact in this field.

Our program is designed to equip students with skills in key areas that bridge technology and sustainability at the urban level, locally, regionally, and globally. These areas include smart transportation planning, smart cities, sustainable urban planning and design, natural disaster management, climate change, infrastructure planning, and urban hydrology. Students will learn to use specialized software, apply practical methods, and integrate planning techniques to develop cities' urban aspects. They will also learn to adapt to smart development, ensuring flexibility, effectiveness, and sustainability, and work towards improving the natural, social, cultural, and economic conditions in cities.

This program aligns with the new vision for future cities in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Arab region. An example is NEOM in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a smart, sustainable, and environmentally friendly city that will feed artificial intelligence data into its advanced technologies to interact harmoniously with residents. Also, the vision of this program aligns with what was recently announced about the establishment of a new smart sustainable administrative city in the Jordanian capital, Amman, one of the most important vital national strategic pioneering projects. It will depend on investing renewable natural resources in producing clean energy and refining water, as well as it will include an advanced transportation system within a comfortable and ideal environment that is sustainable for business and an environmentally friendly city that is built on the concepts of the knowledge economy and artificial intelligence.
