The Department of English Language and Literature was established at the beginning of the first semester of the academic year (1991/1992), and the teaching staff consists of eight members whose academic ranks are divided between professor (3), associate professor (2), and assistant professor (4).

The tasks and activities of the faculty vary between teaching the scientific subjects proposed by the department’s plan, and preparing students by supervising the research, reports, and written work they prepare. The department uses the latest methods, including modern facilities (English language laboratories) and the public library, with the aim of achieving qualitative teaching/learning and a distinguished level of students.

The Department of English Language and Literature also attaches special importance to scientific research based on its awareness of the necessity of forming a regular scientific career for its members. Therefore, the Department provides all the capabilities to enable its members to develop and advance their projects, in addition to providing full support for their attendance at local and international scientific conferences and forums.

Faculty members are distinguished by their active presence in local, Arab and international cultural, scientific and creative events and activities, through their qualitative participation in various forums and seminars. The department offers many extracurricular cultural activities in which faculty members, students and specialists from outside the university participate. An example of this is: the International Day of the English Language Department, which falls on the twenty-third of April of each year - the birth of Shakespeare and the student forum that brings together many students from various public and private Jordanian universities.

The department includes two programs in English language and literature:

1) English Language and Literature Program – Bachelor’s level

2) English Language and Literature Program – Master’s level

The department balances basic language skills, linguistics in its various branches, and various types of literature in different eras, in addition to translation. The English Department also helps its students master the language and understand the role of literature in culture and society.

The department was interested in establishing an ongoing relationship with the community by providing services to gifted students and school teachers in different governorates. Above all, the department prepares students in the two programs (bachelor’s and master’s) for the local and Arab labor market

Entry Requirements

Students with a high school diploma or its equivalent from outside Jordan can enroll in higher education institutions directly through websites of public and private universities or intermediate community colleges based on their averages. Universities implement the credit hours system, which allows students to choose courses according to their study plan.

Students wishing to enroll in a master's program must hold a bachelor's degree. Furthermore, students who wish to enroll in doctoral programs must hold a master's degree.

In addition, students wishing to enroll in postgraduate programs are required to provide a certificate confirming their English proficiency level in a TOEFL or IELTS exam. They could also demonstrate a certain proficiency level in French or German. Lastly, they could take an English language exam held by the higher education institution they apply in.

In the event that the student fails to prove the required level of English, German or French, or fails the English equivalency exam, they may study a qualifying program in English at the university where they undertake additional six credit hours; he/she must score a minimum grade that varies according to their specialization.
