About PhD in Urban and Architectural Management and Valuation

Overview The overall objective of the programme lies in promoting research in the fields of planning, the management and evaluation of architecture, the city and the wider territory. Territorial, urban and property related issues are approached from a transdisciplinary technical, as well as judicial, economic, social and environmental perspective. The learning of instrumental techniques is complemented with a critical reflection of strategies of urban intervention, together with the analysis of a number of national and international experiences.The programmeOne of the basic objectives of the Doctoral Programme is that the students reach a full understanding of and internalise the knowledge fields linked to planning, urban land management and evaluation, in order that they are able to apply the techniques and methods belonging to these fields.A secondary objective is that of incorporating to the traditional disciplines such as architecture, geography and economics, new capacities and skills necessary and shared by different fields of knowledge. The planning and management of the city, as well as that of the wider territory in general, and the economic, social and environmental evaluation of the urban transformations are an example of these new emergent disciplines, which require new formative challenges that bring value and capacity of professional projection in fields treated insufficiently at the undergraduate level.Furthermore the programme seeks to fill the existing deficit in this discipline, in the fields of science and research, by furthering knowledge of and practice in the following aspects:Researching skills, methodological and technical rigor in the study, diagnosis and proposals of spatial planning in the fields of land policy, the management and administration of urbanism;Training and promotion of communication skills, team work and management and negotiation procedures;Training in the analysis and synthesis of parameters directed towards the environmental, economic and social evaluation of the city and the wider territory;Knowledge and training in the use of the new GIS-ICT technologies applied to the city and the wider territory andResearch training in the field of the urban environment and the sustainability of urban and regional development.Among the overall skills that the programme seeks to promote, it is necessary to mention the development of the skills to carry out architectural, urban and regional research within the lines of research set out within the Programme, with the maximum rigor and seriousness. In this sense the Programme promotes the external validation of the quality of the research developed by the PhD students, encouraging the publication of such research in well-known journals, as well as the presentation of communications in refereed national and international congresses.Equally the Doctoral Programme of Urban and Architectural Management and Valuations encourages the international mobility of the students, through the specific mobility programmes offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education, the Socrates Agreements signed with a number of European Universities, and the Network of Architecture, City and Environment. One of the fundamental objectives of the Programme is to maximise the number of European PhDs.The practical acquisition of the research skills (capacity of conception, design, methodology and management of the research project; critical and analytical capacity of understanding and synthesis; capacity of interaction in complex teams, and of communication and of spreading of the results of the research; as well as the dissemination to the wider society) will be carried out within the framework of competitive or structural research projects, in which the students will have the opportunity to participate as part of their training in research .Participation in transdisciplinary research teams seeks to enable the students to acquire the aforementioned skills, reflecting the professional nature of team work of contemporary research.Finally, the Doctoral Programme seeks to maintain close links with the students once they have obtained their PhD degree, with a view to the development of transnational cooperation through initiatives such as the Network of Architecture, City and Environment (ACE) and the Annual International Conferences on Virtual City and Territory, directed towards encouraging training, technological progress, research and the diffusion of the research culture. The Doctoral Programme of Urban and Architectural Management and Valuations was created in the 1989-1990 academic year, as a consequence of the fusion of the Doctoral Programmes of Urban Management and Real Estate Valuations that had offered since the 1986-87 academic year, coinciding with the creation of new doctoral studies within the UPC.
