Master's Degree
Overview
The ever-complex nature of business environment makes it necessary for people with diverse backgrounds to be unified around the same organizational goal. Hence, there is a need for individuals who can understand all the functions in a business and take responsibility in various departments or as a manager. The main purpose of this program is to equip students coming from various disciplines with the methods, techniques and academic knowledge that help to cover businesses with this holistic approach.
Graduate programs in Management within the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences exist for more than thirty years. The master program admits students who are expected to learn and do research in various fields of business management such as sales and marketing, accounting and finance, management and organization, production, project management, quantitative tools, technology and law.
While the program without thesis mostly targets people who seek professional career, the program with thesis is more suitable to people who would like to handle business problems with an academic perspective and do research.
Goal
The main goal of the program is to endow students with theoretical and applied knowledge about the major disciplines of business management. Hence, students with different academic backgrounds (such as engineering, economics or social sciences) will acquire managerial skills that help them assume responsibility during planning, organization, management and controlling or create their own business.

Graduates have the opportunity to work in many different fields. The program has a structure that emphasizes entrepreneurship and top management regardless of any area. In addition, the program with thesis is designed for those who seek academic career or researcher positions.
Target Audience
The master program is open to all applicants with an undergraduate degree except the graduates of ITU Management Engineering and ITU Industrial Engineering departments.
Program Outcomes
Developing and enhancing the knowledge related to management concepts, research methods, and applications, based upon the competency in undergraduate level (ITU i).
Interpreting the knowledge gained from management field via combining the knowledge from other disciplines, comprehending the interdisciplinary interactions, conducting interdisciplinary research, and creating new types of knowledge (ITU ii, iv, xvi).
Detecting complex problems in certain areas within the field, collecting and analyzing data in order to fix these problems, developing strategic approaches and solutions by using research methods and conceptual knowledge, which are unique to the field (ITU iii, v, vii, x, xv).
Participating in team work, and fulfilling the leader role when it is necessary, using information technologies and presenting the findings in Turkish or in English in oral, visual and written forms (ITU viii, x, xii, xiii).
Interpreting the specialized knowledge and skills gained from the Management field critically, and conducting independent research that may contribute to the existing knowledge and applications (ITU vi, ix).
Understanding the relationships and interactions among people, organizations and societies, internalizing the ethical values, contributing to the society through emphasizing both the technological and social developments in the field, and the sustainability constraint (ITU xi, xiv).
(For the program with thesis) To communicate the current developments in Management and one’s own work orally, visually and in written forms, by supporting them with quantitative and qualitative data and to present them to other groups in and out of the field in international arenas with competence, at least, in one foreign language and required computer program (ITU xvii).
PhD
Overview
Doctoral program aims at providing theoretical knowledge about specific areas of business management and train individuals who will carry out active research in this field. Lectures in finance, marketing, management and organization are supported with courses such as research methods and statistical and quantitative techniques. The program mainly consists of three phases: 8 courses (21 credits + Scientific Research, Ethics and Seminar course), then proficiency exam and finally doctoral thesis.
Goal
The main goal of the doctoral program is to provide students with a deep theoretical knowledge of business management and enable them to conduct academic research that contributes to identify and solve problems faced in business organizations. We aim at training specialized researchers who develop and diffuse knowledge and ideas while assuming responsibility in key academic and managerial positions worldwide.
Objectives
The program expects to graduate students who
- have solid theoretical background in finance, marketing or management and organization as well as other areas related to business environment,
- apprehend contemporary and advanced research techniques and are able to apply them
- follow recent developments in the field and incorporate these in their research
- contribute to the theoretical knowledge in their specialized area

Target Audience
The program accepts candidates who have an undergraduate or graduate degree in business, economic and administrative sciences, social sciences or engineering.
Program Outcomes
- To develop expertise by integrating current and advanced level knowledge in the field of Management with new ideas and/or research; and construct original definitions that would bring innovation into the field; assess the interactions among the sub dimensions of Management field, such as finance, marketing, and management and organization, and find solutions by using this expertise through analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating new and complex knowledge. (ITU i, ii, v)
- To be able to evaluate new knowledge in the field of Management through a systematic approach; study an original topic, and to develop an innovative idea, method, design or application or to apply a conventional idea, method, design or application into a different field. (ITU iii, iv)
- To gain advanced skills in using research methods necessary for studies in the field. (ITU vi)
- To be competent in expanding the boundaries of the knowledge in the field through doing independent research and being able to publish at least one scientific journal article in peer reviewed journals. (ITU vii, viii)
- To be competent in being a leader in situations where there is a need for finding solutions to interdisciplinary problems. (ITU ix)
- To develop field-related innovative ideas and methods by making use of advanced intellectual processes such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. (ITU x)
- To be competent in defending his/her ideas on topics in the field of Management in national and international platforms and being competent in transferring his/her knowledge and experience to others in the field, and to those from other areas, in written, oral and visual forms. (ITU xii, xiii)
- To contribute to the transformation of his/her society into information society by announcing and promoting the scientific, economic, technological, social and cultural advances in the field of Management and contributing to the solution of social, scientific, cultural and ethical problems, as well as extending these values, by using strategic decision making processes.
