Overview
Townsville is the unofficial capital of North Queensland.
The administrative offices which are in the city are related to government, community and main business connected to northern half of the state.
The city is known for its industrial activities, and it is said to be the major centre in this regard, in having zinc refineries, nickel refinery and lots of other facilities believed to be the largest worldwide.
The operations are underway in the port of Townsville in a bid to enlarge the channel to allow for much larger goods and passenger ships to pass so that locals can benefit from the port to a high level. This port is essential as it is very close to Asia and major businesses like China.
Townsville was named in his honour, Robert Towns, when he paid a visit to the city in 1866, and approved to offer ongoing financial assistance to the modern settlement.
