Robotics and Automation Option - Mechanical Engineering Technology

    About

    • Immersive co-op experiences in robotics, automation, and manufacturing companies or in organizations that support industry.
    • Advanced course work and elective courses focus on the programming, control, sensors-vision systems, or machine learning/artificial intelligence in robotics and automation.

The robotics and automation option allows for specialized study in all engineering aspects of industrial and collaborative (cobots) robotics along with automation/controls. The option focuses on the primary areas of human machine interface (HMI), robot and machine mobility or locomotion, manipulators and end effectors, robot/automation programming, and sensing and perception. This option is part of the mechanical engineering technology BS degree.

    Courses in Robotics and Automation

The robotics and automation option begins with a course sequence that starts in the third year of the mechanical engineering technology major. This ensures that you have developed the foundational engineering skills needed for specialization in more advanced course work that focuses on the principles and dynamics of robotics and automation. Courses in robotics and automation include Automation Control Systems, Robots and Automation, Advanced Automation Systems and Control, Robotics: Sensors and Vision, and Electronics Manufacturing.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

For all bachelor’s degree programs, a strong performance in a college preparatory program is expected. Generally, this includes:

    • 4 years of English
    • 3 years of social studies and/or history
    • 3-4 years of mathematics
      • Specific math requirements are detailed by college below
    • 2-3 years of science
      • Specific science requirements are detailed by college below
    • Completion of a High School Diploma or its equivalence

    Homeschooled Students
RIT has a history of admitting academically talented students from homeschool settings. In the absence of consistent homeschooling standards nationally and globally, guidelines have been developed for homeschooled students seeking RIT admission.

    Career

    Cooperative Education

What's different about an RIT education? It's the career experience you gain by completing cooperative education and internships with top companies in every single industry. You'll earn more than a degree. You'll gain real-world career experience that sets you apart. It's exposure–early and often–to a variety of professional work environments, career paths, and industries.

Co-ops and internships take your knowledge and turn it into know-how. Your engineering co-ops will provide hands-on experience that enables you to apply your engineering knowledge in professional settings while you make valuable connections between classwork and real-world applications.

All engineering majors are required to complete four blocks (48 weeks) of cooperative education experience. For students in the robotics and automation option, your co-ops will be with companies the utilize robotics and automation. A sampling of those that hire RIT students for co-ops and for full-time employment include Amazon Robotics, Apple, BorgWarner, Bosch, Boeing, Corning, EJ Gallo, General Dynamics, Gulfstream, Keurig Dr. Pepper, L3 Harris, Magna, Mars Wrigley, Pratt & Whitney, Pepsico, Raytheon, SpaceX, Tesla, and Toyota to name a few.
