    This course is distinctive in its focus on using financial skills in organisations. You develop hard and soft accounting skills as well as the interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively in the challenging business environment.

    If you already hold a professional accounting qualification such as ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW, you only need to undertake two modules to complete the award - Current Issues in Accounting and Research, and the Accounting Dissertation.

    Accounting and finance are central to managing organisations effectively. This course integrates accounting, leadership and change, and gives you a practical insight into developing the discipline. It also provides you with a firm knowledge of accounting and finance and the adaptability needed in a rapidly changing environment.

    Three core modules deal with the disciplines of financial accounting, management accounting and international finance. You also study the global business environment and explore contemporary issues in accounting thought before taking accounting skills and management research modules in preparation for your dissertation.

    This programme is open to qualified accountants who may enter with 100 credits of advanced standing, leaving them with only the Current Issues in Accounting & Research and the Accounting Dissertation to complete the award.

    Core modules

    Accounting Dissertation

    You integrate their learning and development, and synthesise their knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of accounting and finance through application to professional issues arising in a relevant context. This is achieved by undertaking an extended submission (or dissertation) related to an issue in accounting and finance which is of current professional/technical or organisational significance. The topic area, context and approach will be proposed by you and agreed with a tutor before work on your dissertation can formally commence. This is a 60-credit module comprising 600 prescribed learning hours, of which the vast majority will comprise you directing your own learning and workload and preparation of your dissertation thesis. You are supported through the process of preparing and completing the dissertation by a supervising tutor who will monitor progress accordingly.

    Contemporary Issues and Research Methods

    You study a range of research strategies and techniques to investigate topical accounting issues in a theoretical framework, which helps to explain and illustrate the research process. You also gain the skills required to develop a research proposal on a relevant topic.

    Core Concepts in Accounting and Finance

    This module introduces essential accounting and finance concepts and principles for master's level students to afford an appreciation of the nature of financial information, the identification of relevant economic events, the determination of the most appropriate financial measures for those events, and the analysis of the effects of those events on the performance and financial standing of an organisation. You are assessed via a case study-based examination

    Cybersecurity and Financial Crime

    You consider this area of increasing concern for accountants and finance professionals in both domestic and international economies. You gain a detailed knowledge of cybersecurity and financial crime, and develop the skills to prevent, investigate and detect such conduct in both the public and private sectors.

    Finance Management

    This module provides a theoretical and practical insight into a range of financial management techniques. It examines the means by which financial information is used to inform the effective management of an organisation, including decision making and control, performance management and, investment management. You also considers associated managerial behaviours and the relevance of issues such as risk management and environmental impact. You are assessed by a combination of a report and an examination.

    Global Business Environment: Culture, Management and the Economy

    This module explores concepts and techniques in financial reporting, governance and professional ethics, and then moves to develop a critical understanding of the theoretical issues associated with the subject and the relevant skills associated with work issues in the area. You are assessed by a combination of a written essay and an end examination.

    Reporting, Governance and Accountability

    This module explores concepts and techniques in financial reporting, governance and professional ethics, and then moves to develop a critical understanding of the theoretical issues associated with the subject and the relevant skills associated with work issues in the area. You are assessed by a combination of a written essay and an end examination.
