About

Accounting & Finance The Department of Accounting and Finance offers a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Accounting. The department also offers minors in accounting and in finance. The Department of Accounting and Finance teaches the dynamic environment of financial data collection, analysis and reporting in a global economy. Our graduates earn positions in professional accounting and finance areas at public, private and nonprofit organizations. Additionally, many of our students go on to graduate school and/or pursue professional certifications. Students' oral and written communication skills as well as research skills are refined while accruing a broad understanding of financial management of profit and not-for-profit organizations. Our graduates depart with an understanding of accounting guidelines and regulations. Our students are encouraged to get involved in extracurricular activities to support their academic goals. We offer memberships in The Virginia State University Chapters of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and the Financial Management Association (FMA). Students have hands on experience as well as opportunities to receive financial support through internships and scholarships available for qualified students.

Requirements

Entry Requirements

3 units of mathematics that must include the full Algebra I curriculum and two additional courses at or above the level of Algebra I. It is strongly recommended that students complete Geometry, Algebra II, and a fourth higher level math course
4 units of English
2 units of Science (must include a laboratory science, i.e. Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
2 units of Social Studies (History, Government, Civics, Geography)
2 Units of Foreign Language recommended

a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 (grades 9-11).
evidence of strong performance in a challenging academic curriculum as demonstrated by a grade of B or better in core course.

English Program Requirements

All applicants for whom English is a foreign language must demonstrate proficiency in the English language through the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or international English Language Testing System (IELTS) if English is not the primary language spoken in the household. A minimum score of 61 preferred 71 (internet based), 173 preferred (197) (computer based), or 500 preferred (527) is required on the TOEFL. A minimum score of 5.5 on the IELTS for admission.
