    About

    You are part of the SRCActingRep, a unique collaboration across the programme where you perform in a One Act play festival and a full length production at the end of the year as part of the HEFest. You learn to develop performance skills alongside growing your creative practice and taking on a production role within the SRCActingRep.

    The programme aims to take work to the NSDF (National Student Drama Festival) as well as undertaking trips to local, national and international theatres. London and New York Trips are planned for every other year. There is regular industry workshops as well as practical and academic seminars.

    After completing this course, there are potential progression routes to drama school, employment or onto further study on our bespoke BA (Hons) Performing Arts (Top-up) degree.

    You develop techniques in physical theatre, singing, acting techniques, voice (radio), acting for camera, contextual studies and devising. You perform in local theatres including the Arc in Stockton, Billingham Forum and the newly renovated Middlesbrough Town Hall.

    Year 1 core modules

    Acting in Context

    Investigate the historical, social, political, cultural and economic development of acting. Develop your understanding of the historical developments of acting and share this with your peers through discussion, debate and presentation. You also begin to equip yourself with an understanding of self-reflection.

    Acting Techniques and Performance

    Apply appropriate acting techniques to a live production and reflect on your development throughout. You develop a wide range of skills including communication, organisation and practical skills such as flair, professionalism and application of technique.

    Movement

    Develop a practical understanding of the core principles of physical theatre as a combination of bodily and textual communication. You gain key knowledge of training practices, explore the application of physical techniques and stylistic skills and are introduced to concepts of staging and choreography within physical theatre performance.

    Singing Techniques, Vocal Anatomy and Performance

    Explore and develop your understanding of the ever-changing landscape of singing techniques, vocal anatomy and performance.

    Work Ready Experience

    Apply the knowledge and skills you have gained across all modules to two live briefs. You work in performance teams and take on the responsibilities of one of the roles studied to support the creation of a live piece of theatre – directed by the tutor, as part of the SRCRep. There are two performances across the academic year where you are responsible for the performance of the shows, including a full-length play.

     

    Year 2 core modules

    Acting for Camera

    You are introduced to key performance techniques in modern media to support research, rehearsal and performance in television/film acting which enables you to broaden practical knowledge and performative techniques needed in current media.

    Further Acting Techniques and Performance

    Building on your learning from the Acting Techniques and Performance you further develop acting techniques to a live production and reflect on your development. You gain enhanced skills in communication, organisation, and practical applications such as flair, professionalism and technique.

    Further Movement

    Develop a wide range of movement skills including communication, organisation and practical skills aligned to industry expectations. You also collaborate on a piece based on a theme, and a choreographed movement piece, developed by a choreographer.

    Singing Techniques, Music Theory and Performance

    Explore and develop an understanding of the ever-changing landscape of singing techniques, music theory and performance.

    Work Ready Experience 2

    Apply the knowledge and skills you have gained across all modules to two live briefs.     You study the arts in a range of ways including practical workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Tutorials help you to discover and develop your personal aptitude for your chosen career path.

    Teaching staff on the programme are all industry professionals with specific teaching and industry knowledge for their area.

    You are assessed in a variety of ways, including essays, reports, presentations and performance observations. There are no external exams. Each assessment is carefully designed to give you the necessary tools to succeed.

    Career

    Graduates can expect to work in the arts and entertainment industries, education and the media. Successful completion of this course can lead to progression on to our honours degree in performing arts.
