    Actuarial Mathematics

    About

WPI's distinctive undergraduate degree program in Actuarial Mathematics will give you a head start to becoming a well-rounded and successful actuary. These highly specialized professionals use their mathematical expertise, business intelligence, and computer skills to help companies assess risk and solve financial problems. As a student in our hands-on program, you will master mathematical theory and apply your knowledge to solve real problems in the actuarial industry. You'll also have opportunities to conduct research alongside professional actuaries and gain complementary skills in business, economics, and computer science. You will be well prepared to pass preliminary actuarial certification exams and will graduate as a confident and creative problem solver. BS/MS Option With planning, students may complete both a bachelor's degree in Actuarial Mathematics and a master's degree in Financial Mathematics or Applied Statistics within 5 years total at WPI.
Our curriculum includes specialized math courses and introductory study in business, economics, data science, and computer science. You will gain a firm grounding in fundamental mathematics before delving into advanced topics like interest theory, risk theory, loss models, and survival functions. You'll also hone your computer programming skills and explore subjects like corporate finance and project management. Your rigorous coursework and hands-on practice will put you on track to prepare for the examinations administered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). In addition, WPI offers coursework that satisfies other SOA/CAS requirements, known as Validation by Educational Experience (VEE).
Project-based learning is at the heart of WPI's educational philosophy. Across your four years here you'll be expected to work on projects of all sizes and in many areas, from pure math to applied math, as well as social science and the humanities. Projects are especially important in Actuarial Mathematics, allowing students to solve real problems faced by professional actuaries. Our students regularly complete their senior capstone projects in collaboration with sponsors including major insurance companies, financial services firms, and banks.

    How to Apply

    Step #1: Submit Application

First year candidates: Complete your application through the Common Application. Make sure you share who you are and what makes you a fit for WPI, and check over your answers. We encourage you to review our college application timeline checklist to put your best foot forward!

Transfer candidates: Complete the WPI Transfer Application. Make sure to also review important entrance and application requirements. Additional helpful information can also be found by reviewing frequently asked questions.

No matter which type of student you are, be sure to use an email address that you check frequently when filling out your application. Keep in mind that many high schools block external emails, so we recommend using your personal email address if you have one. This email will be the main method of contact that WPI uses to reach you throughout the application process.

    Step #2: Request Required Materials

Request your required high school transcripts and letters of recommendation while completing your Common Application. WPI is a test-blind institution, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not part of the WPI application. We do require:

    • Official transcripts sent from high school
      • Transfer applicants must also submit college/university transcripts
    • School counselor letter of recommendation
    • Teacher letter of recommendation
    • Early Decision applicants are required to submit the Early Decision Agreement

    Additional Requirements

Some types of applicants will have additional requirements. Please select an option below if you are a homeschool student, international student, or transfer student.

    Step #3: Review Application

Once you submit your application, watch your email for a receipt from WPI. Check your status online to confirm you are not missing any information needed to review your application.
