    About

    • Learn in our brand-new Home of Engineering and Materials . A purpose-built space for innovation and creativity that is transforming the way our students study, research and shape the world.
    • Gain in-depth understanding of key factors shaping the design and selection of materials used in advanced engineering applications, their processing, properties and stability.
    • We are ranked 4 th in the UK and in the top 25 in the world for Materials Science (QS World Rankings 2023).
    • Accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

This master's course provides you with an in-depth understanding of the key factors that govern the design and selection of materials for use in advanced engineering applications, as well as their processing, properties and stability.

Focusing on composites, advanced alloys and engineering ceramics, you will explore the technologies used in the manufacturing and processing of advanced materials and develop an understanding of the relationships between composition, microstructure, processing and performance.

You will learn how to assess materials performance inservice and develop an understanding of the processes of degradation in hostile conditions. You will also be trained in the essential skills needed to design and develop the next generation of high performance engineering materials, establishing a strong foundation for a future career in industry or research.

This course is aimed at students who have a strong materials background who want to gain more specialised knowledge of the principles, structure, processing and design of advanced engineering materials. However, it is suitable also for graduates from other engineering and science backgrounds who wish to specialise in materials engineering.

    Career

    Career opportunities

The masters experience at UoM helped me gain a good breadth of knowledge around my area of interest that first helped me get into the aerospace industry.

The application based teaching in some courses helped prepare me in solving real world engineering problems through materials solutions. Also, having experiential learning opportunities through the student union helped hone my communication and leadership skills.

Arush Sinhal / Consultant at BAE Systems

Our graduates fill key posts as materials scientists, engineers, managers and consultants in academia, industry and research and development.

An Advanced Engineering Materials MSc also provides a solid base for further study and research, and is a gateway to progress onto a PhD.

Recent graduates of this course have gone on to work for companies including:

    • Saudi Aramco
