    Overview Our African and African American Studies program at the University of Memphis has three areas of activity - curriculum, an annual lecture series, and community outreach - but our key focus is on our interdisciplinary academic program.Our mission is to help students to develop a solid knowledge base in African and African-American studies as well as to acquire analytical skills and approaches that will enhance understanding of historical and contemporary issues associated with the experience of Africans and African Americans.What can I do with this Major?Majoring in African and African American Studies challenges students with a high level of critical thinking encouraging the growth of knowledge beyond the bounds of the traditional college program. Learning about and tackling important societal issues such as poverty and healthcare provides an understanding that will allow a graduate to stand out to potential employers.     1All students, both freshmen and transfer, must apply online for admission as an undergraduate student.Pay the non-refundable undergraduate application fee of $50.All international applicants must complete the Affidavit of Support Form which can be downloaded from our website.All international transfer applicants must have their international documents evaluated by a US credentialing agency that holds membership with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. A TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE exam is required of all international students who are from countries where English is not their first language.  All international students must submit a certification of finances document, which establishes the ability to pay for school and support the student while studying at the University.Health records must be provided within 30 days of the first day of classes showing freedom from Tuberculosis.
