    About

Department of Agricultural Education and Communications Doctoral Program

The Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Communications and Education is a resident degree designed to prepare students for a career as a faculty member. The program provides an opportunity for advanced study in the human dimensions of agriculture (agricultural communications, agricultural education, and agricultural leadership) to meet the growing demand for college and university faculty who can provide instruction in more than one dimension. This degree program requires a minimum of 48 semester hours of graduate coursework along with the development of a dissertation (12 hours) beyond a masters degree (total of 60 hours post-masters degree).

At or near the end of course work, the student will take a qualifying examination that requires a synthesis and application of knowledge acquired during the course of study for the doctoral student. This qualifying examination process also includes an oral examination under the supervision of the committee. Students are required to complete a dissertation and pass an oral defense of the dissertation.

Agricultural Leadership Track. The Agricultural Leadership Track may be included within the Ph.D. in Agricultural Communication and Education. Students are not required to take additional hours but are able to include the four AGLS courses (12 hours) within the 60 required hours of the Ph.D. program. Agricultural Leadership will be added to student transcript upon graduation.

    How to Apply

    • Unofficial copies of transcripts, and test scores are required for application evaluation purposes. If admitted, you will be required to submit official transcripts, diplomas/degree certificates, and test scores. Please do not send official transcripts until you have received a notice of acceptance from Texas Tech Graduate School.
    • Provide Program Materials: In addition to transcripts and test scores, most Texas Tech graduate programs require supplemental materials for admission review. These materials may include (but are not limited to) items such as a statement of purpose, recommendations, writing samples, creative portfolio, etc. Supplemental materials are reviewed by the department only, not the Office of Graduate Admission. Please refer to the homepage of your intended graduate department as well as the instructions on the "Program Materials" quadrant on our online application to verify which supplemental materials are needed. You may also find the required material here.
    • While you will be able to add to certain segments on the application (e.g. test scores) post submission, you will not be able to make revisions once the application has been submitted.
    • Submitting incorrect information on your application or failing to include important details can delay the admissions process.
