    About

    American Studies is the perfect course if you want to learn more about the history, literature, politics, film, art and popular culture of the United States. Whether your interests lie in the Civil War or the War on Terror, Walt Whitman or Walt Disney, this course will help you to develop your critical and imaginative skills in the context of the American experience and its global significances.

    If you want to gain an in-depth understanding of US society and how it has come to exert such a powerful influence on the modern world, Northumbria is the university for you. We have one of the largest concentrations of US specialists working outside North America. We also offer opportunities to spend a semester or a whole year at at one of our partner institutions located throughout the US, from New York to California.

    English Program Requirements

    International applicants shoud have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent*).

    As an American Studies student at Northumbria, you will develop the kinds of analytical and communication skills that are invaluable in any number of careers. If you take up the opportunity to spend time in a partner institution in North America, you will gain a broader cultural exposure that is attractive to potential employers. For those who stay in the UK, you will undertake a module called Your Graduate Future which includes a work placement and which will help you to develop additional skills focused specifically on employment. All students will be able to take advantage of the services of our Careers and Employment Service, which offers CV advice, interview preparation and portfolio development.

    At the end of a thoroughly enjoyable educational experience, you will emerge from your time at university with the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.

    How to Apply

    Bookings for September 2022 are now open.

    Visit the Student Portal to start your booking and select your bedroom. We guarantee accommodation to all students, including those joining Northumbria University on a Foundation programme.

     

    You can book accommodation in five easy steps:

    1. Confirm Northumbria University as your Firm/First choice University.

    If you are applying via UCAS, please log into UCAS Track and accept your course offer as Firm. Please note this might take up-to 48h to be updated on the University system.

    If you are a direct entry applicant, please visit the Applicant Portal to review and accept your course offer. To learn more about the process and the required steps, you can visit the After You Apply page. 

    2. Visit the Student Portal and log in to the Accommodation section where you can start your booking.

    Wait up-to 48 hours for your course acceptance to be recorded and using your applicant portal login details (you will have received this via email when you applied) select the Accommodation section to start your application.

    Top Tip: Make sure you register with your personal email address and not one associated to a school/college. School/College email addresses are often closed after you leave and can delay the process.

    3. Select your bedroom

    Select the exact bedroom you want to live in based on real-time availability by using our self-selection system. Browse through the available options and see the exact location of your bedroom. You can also see some general details about your flatmates, such age, country of origin, course and level of study.

    Did you know? If you are a postgraduate student, the booking system will automatically show you available flats with other postgraduate students or students who might be in their final year.  

    4. Complete your contract 

    Once you are happy with your room selection, you are required to sign a tenancy agreement to accept and confirm your accommodation booking. This is completed online and you receive a confirmation email with all relevant documents. 

    Top Tip: Make sure you read your contract carefully as it is a legally binding contract. If you don’t understand anything, get in touch, we will be happy to run through it with you.

    5. Pay your advance rent payment

    The final step of your booking is making an advance rent payment of £250. Once the payment has been made, the room is secured for you. This payment is part of your total accommodation cost and is used towards your final rent payment. 

     

    Once you've completed the process above, the room is secured for you. You will also get access to our dedicated Facebook groups to help you connect with flatmates before you arrive.
