    The American Studies major is the perfect combination of English and history that allows you to dig deeper into American identities, culture, and history. Using both literature and visual media, you will make meaningful connections between society and culture today and in the past.

    Entry Requirements

    For qualitative purposes, SAP requires a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0. Undergraduate student GPAs are reviewed annually, normally in May after spring grades have been posted, to evaluate eligibility for federal, state, and institutional grants, scholarships, loans and work programs. Note: Some degree programs may have higher GPA and credit requirements for students to maintain program eligibility. Students should consult the program description in the catalog for requirements of their individual programs.

    Career

    Graduates of this major will earn a degree that offers many of the opportunities of a traditional English major, but with a specialization in American culture that will be recognizable by graduate programs and employers. Experience in media other than literature will prepare you to link your expertise to contemporary expressions of specifically American cultural issues. Our graduates have gone on to graduate work in professional writing and are well prepared for the fields of teaching, law, technical writing, editing, publishing, journalism, and public relations.
