Animal Management (Animal Behaviour & Welfare)

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of animal behaviour and welfare and will equip you with the necessary knowledge to assess the welfare needs of a range of different species. You will acquire and develop practical animal management skills and devise management strategies pertinent to the animal management industry. Students opting for this pathway will also benefit from our new state of the art Animal Management Centre, completed in June 2018. The centre has extended our high-quality provision for Animal Management HNC students. The new facilities include a reception area with a large display tank, specialist rooms for fish, invertebrates, nocturnals, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, amphibians, plus quarantine and isolation rooms. The course will be taught using well integrated practical and theoretical sessions, providing an opportunity for you to experience real-life situations. It will also provide you with a grounding in industry knowledge accompanied by the development of essential softer skills, including leadership and management, which will act as valuable stepping stone onto a Bachelor’s degree programme or straight into employment within the animal industry. Teaching and learning will take place through a combination of lectures and seminars providing an opportunity to share knowledge and experience and providing a forum for discussion and debate. In addition to timetabled sessions, 10-12 hours of personal study will be required each week. You will be expected to become resourceful and to take responsibility for your own learning. Independent research, reporting on own reading, one to one guidance and small group discussion will help you progress. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus, in addition to the College’s Specialist Support Centre. HND is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and follows on from successful completion of the HNC. The HND will be offered providing there are a sufficient number of students.
