    About

    Doctorate in Anthropology (PhD)

    Our doctoral degree program will give you the intensive training you need to become a professional anthropologist or archaeologist, either within the academy or outside it. We emphasize comparative studies, theoretical grounding and ethnographic and archaeological fieldwork. We offer two concentrations: archaeology and sociocultural anthropology.

    Whichever area of specialization you choose, a PhD in anthropology will prepare you for work in a variety of fields, including academia, development, nongovernmental organizations and business. Graduates of our program have gone on to become university professors, direct nonprofit organizations, and work as consultants, advisers and researchers.

    • Send official transcript(s) from every college or university attended. You must have a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or equivalent.

To avoid any delays, please include our mail stop, MS 084, in the address.

    Statement of goals

    Your statement of goals should:

    • Contain at least 500 words.

    • Address why you are pursuing a graduate degree.

    • Describe how the program outcomes will help you achieve your professional and personal goals.

    • We require one letter of recommendation from a current OR former supervisor, manager or employer who can assess your workplace performance.

    • Add their information to the online application and they'll receive a link to upload the letter.

    Submitted an application? Your application will be processed immediately. Our admissions committee typically makes admissions decisions within one week of receiving a completed application. Decision letters are emailed and mailed to all applicants. 

    If you have already submitted an application, you may log in to the GPS Application Management Center to view the progress of your application. You may also contact an admissions advisor or the GPS admissions office. Please note that the admissions committee does not begin reviewing your application until all required documents are received.
