    Master’s Programs

    Applicants must possess a four-year degree from a university, college or institute. The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requires at least a 70% average across courses taken in the last two full-time years of the undergraduate degree. Equivalent qualifications may be considered based on the standards of the discipline or profession.

    Doctoral Programs

    Applicants must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent from a university, college or institute, and provide evidence of research potential. The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requires at least a 70% average in the Master’s degree, as determined by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

    How to Apply

    In order to apply to graduate studies at Western, it is important that you understand the essential elements of the Western graduate school application. No application will be considered until it is complete. The responsibility rests with the applicant to ensure that all documents (e.g., transcripts, letters of recommendation, test results such as TOEFL scores, GRE scores) are submitted.

    A completed application provides Western with the following:

    Personal Information
    We ask for basic information concerning your identity and contact information. 

    Academic History
    We ask that you supply Western with a listing of all post‐secondary schools you have attended.

    References
    We will email your referees within 2 hours of entering or updating your reference information. Each reference will be collected by Western and distributed alongside your application once it arrives. No paper reference letters are required.

    Supplemental Questions
    Our graduate programs may ask you unique questions that reflect elements of the program you are applying to. The responses you provide are made available to the program during the assessment process.

    Application Fee Payment
    Western accepts two methods of payment in order to process your application.

    • Credit Card (Visa/MasterCard)
    • Money Order (this must be a money order or bank draft issued from a Canadian Banking Institution. Personal cheques will not be accepted.)

    Supplementary Documents
    Western makes it possible for you to submit your supporting documents in a digital format. This includes an academic record/transcript from each school you note in your Academic History and any additional documents required by the program you are applying to.

    Proficiency in English Scores 
    if applicable (You must have the testing service send your score electronically to Western.)

    How To Start Your Application

    Application Access

    Access to the Western University Graduate Application requires one of two sets of credentials:

    Option #1: Never Applied to Western before?

    If you have never applied to Western University before you will require a temporary Western Applicant Account. The temporary Western Applicant Account (login, password) can be created on the initial page of the application. Click on the Create Account button and fill in the required information.

    Option #2: Applied to Western previously?

    If you have applied to Western previously you were given a Western Student Identity (login, password). You can use an active Western Student Identity to login to the Student Center and create a new Western University Graduate Application. If you need to re-activate your Western Student Identity please follow the steps outlined on the Student Center homepage.

    Western Identity Activation

    After paying and submitting your application you will receive an email with your new Western Student Identity. Your temporary Western Applicant Account will no longer be active.

    Activating Your Western Student Identity

    For applicants who do not hold a current Western Student Identity, a Western Access Code will allow you to activate your Western identity.

    • To obtain your Western Access Code (e.g. 1234), please visit Western Access Code Retrieval. You will need:
      • Your Western ID (e.g. 250555555)
      • Your Application Number
      • Your birthdate

    Western Identity

    Activating your Western Identity will give you access to the Student Center.

    • To activate your Western Identity, please visit Western Identity Manager. You will need:
      • Your Western ID (e.g. 250555555)
      • Your Access Code

    Student Center

    Western's portal for student information, the Student Center will allow you to review your application status, update your contact information, and accept an offer of admission.

    • To access the Student Center, please visit Western Student Center. You will need:
      • Your Western ID (e.g. 250555555)
      • Your password, as created by you when activating your Western Identity
