    Applied Indigenous Knowledge

    About

    This specialization is a first-of-its-kind in Canada. Here at Trent, students work closely with Indigenous elders to engage in land-based learning that shows students how to care for the land, each other, and how to work cooperatively with other cultures. 

    Courses & Requirements 

    Students who have fulfilled the requirements for a single- or joint-major degree in Indigenous Studies may graduate with a Specialization in Applied Indigenous Knowledge if they have successfully completed the following 4.5 credits: 

    • 2.5 INDG credits consisting of INDG 2100Y, 2601Y, and 3508H 

    • 0.5 INDG credit from INDG 3634H or 4500H " 1.0 INDG credit from INDG 2250Y or 2800Y  

    • 0.5 INDG credit from INDG 3745H, 3851H, or 4180H 

    Learn how Indigenous knowledge and teachings helps you understand the world around you
    • Build career connections by getting involved with annual events that take place on campus like the Elders Gathering, Indigenous Fringe Festival, Pine Tree Talks, CINSA, and the Indigenous Women's Symposium
    • Develop your own Indigenous language skills as you study Nishnaabemowin or Mohawk
    • Engage in hands-on research projects with agencies and organizations that make a difference in local communities
    • Become an expert in the art of Indigenous performance as you participate in productions hosted in Nozhem: First Peoples Performance Space, the only publicly-funded space of its kind in Canada

    How to Apply

    You are encouraged to apply to Trent as early as possible as some programs have limited enrolment. 

    • Ontario secondary students will use the OUAC 101 application form at www.ouac.on.ca/101
    • If you are not currently registered as an Ontario secondary student, please apply using the OUAC 105 application and refer to the special application instructions below. www.ouac.on.ca/ouac-105/
    • Domestic students (Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents) not currently enrolled in an Ontario high school, and wishing to only apply to Trent University, can do so through the Trent direct application If you are an international applicant or are applying to multiple universities/programs, please apply at www.ouac.on.ca/ouac-105/

    Access Codes:

    If you are currently enrolled in an Ontario secondary school, guidance counsellors will provide you with access codes (school number, student number, temporary PIN) to access the OUAC site and application process.

    All other applicants will create user profiles on the OUAC site and will not require access codes.
