About

Mathematics prepares students for the demands of a modern global society where sophisticated, quantitative skills are required to solve challenging programs in science, engineering, business, education and government. Mathematicians are essential to the fields of computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, data mining, computer animation, economics, epidemiology, ecology and climatology.

The master's degree is designed to prepare students for careers in practical problem solving and mathematical modeling through collaboration with other professionals such as chemists and materials scientists. These mathematicians work in many areas of business and industry including engineering, defense, research and development and other STEM-related fields.

The accelerated master of science degree programs for current TU undergraduate students provide a way for students to start taking graduate courses while completing an undergraduate degree. These students can enroll in up to nine graduate level courses their senior year as part of the undergraduate program that can potentially double count for undergraduate and graduate requirements. Professionals with a master's degree earn higher salaries, receive additional job responsibilities and are more marketable for promotion in the workplace.

Applied Mathematics Similar to the mathematics degree, a bachelor of science in applied mathematics preserves the discipline's foundation in mathematic principles but provides a designated field of application. Students can choose an option in computer science, engineering, biomathematics, business and education. This path is best suited for those who plan to attend graduate school or work in business or industry. Mathematicians design surveys, experiments or opinion polls to collect data as well as mathematical or statistical models to analyze data. They interpret data and report conclusions from analyses to support and improve business decisions.

Master of Science in Applied Mathematics

Students will be able to:

Apply methods of mathematical modeling and problem solving to a variety of applied topics, including computational and analytical methods.
Demonstrate a general knowledge of mathematics beyond the undergraduate level.
Communicate mathematics effectively in written and oral form.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

If you have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale, you may apply to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

A master's degree is not required to apply for a Ph.D. at Yale, although some programs give preference to applicants with post-baccalaureate training. Consult your program of interest directly for information on how it evaluates applications.

Three letters of recommendation. Enter the names of your recommenders directly in the application, and they will receive a link to upload a letter on your behalf.
$105 application fee or fee waiver.
Standardized tests. GRE requirements vary by program. TOEFL or IELTS are necessary for most non-native English speakers.
Resume/CV.
Some programs have additional requirements, such as a writing sample. You can find information about any specific requirements on the program's website.

English Program Requirements

TOEFL or IELTS is required of most applicants whose native language is not English.

If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS.

No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g. M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.) from any institution.

When you complete your application, you will answer questions about your native language and the primary language of instruction at your baccalaureate institution. If either was English, you will not be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when you submit your application. No separate documentation is necessary.

Although the Graduate School does not have set test minimums for admission, individual departments use these test scores as part of their holistic review of your application. Please check with the department to which you are applying to see if they have a minimum requirement. The Graduate School does require incoming doctoral students who received a score of 25 or below on the TOEFL Speaking section or a 7.5 or below on IELTS Speaking section to participate in a Summer English Language program at Yale in August prior to matriculation. These students are required to demonstrate English proficiency before they are permitted to teach.

How to Apply

Identify the program and degree you want.

Decide if you will apply for a Ph.D. or a terminal Master’s (M.S., M.A., M.A.S.) in one of the programs available at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. (Note that you will earn one or more Master's degrees en route to a Ph.D.) Learn about the program: its faculty, course offerings, and resources. Read the faculty's research publications. If you can identify and articulate why the program is a good fit for you and show how your preparation and interests align well with it, you will have a strong application.

A note to students applying to one of Yale’s professional schools or programs:

If you are applying for a Ph.D. in Architecture, Environment, Investigative Medicine, Law, Management, Music, Nursing, or Public Health, or for an M.S. in Public Health, or an M.A. in Music, be sure to use the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Ph.D./Master's application.

If you are applying for any other degree at one of the University’s professional schools (Art, Architecture, Divinity, Drama, Environment, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, Nursing, and Public Health), visit that school’s website for further instructions. Those programs have separate admissions policies and processes that are administered by the professional schools, not GSAS.

Verify the application deadline for your program.

Application deadlines vary by program, so please see Dates and Deadlines for information about your program of interest. All new students enroll in the fall, and the admissions process begins nearly a year in advance of matriculation.

Determine what standardized tests you need to take. Register early.

Some Ph.D. and Master’s degree programs require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Check your program's standardized testing requirement before you apply. In addition, applicants whose native language is not English may need to take an English Language test (TOEFL or IELTS).
