As a serving police officer, we know you work a demanding job with variable shift patterns. This new degree recognises your prior on-the-job learning, allowing you to develop transferable academic and practical skills in line with new entrants to the force, taking your career to the next level.
Our blended-learning delivery is flexible, helping you to develop your career alongside your day-to-day job.
You'll study part-time by distance learning, supported by regular, optional face-to-face study days in Cambridge, Chelmsford or London Docklands.
This course is based around our existing suite of policing qualifications, but with all-new and adapted modules designed specifically for you as a serving officer. All our policing courses are developed with reference to, and in consultation with, officers from Essex and Cambridgeshire constabularies and the Metropolitan Police.
With an introduction to key concepts and theories, as well as methods of analysis, within policing studies and criminology, youll develop the theoretical and practical knowledge to operate at a high standard in modern policing. Your existing understanding of the scope of policing, its unique elements, and the particular challenges facing the profession will be developed, allowing you to place policing practices and policies in a wider criminological and sociological context, and reflect on their implications.
Youll also acquire skills to critically analyse, evaluate and undertake research, and develop practical initiatives to improve policing performance.
The online element of your course includes pre-recorded lectures and guest lectures; tools such as blogs that allow you to interact critically; quizzes; discussion boards; and group work such as research tasks and developing online briefings and presentations. All your online work is supported by learning materials on Canvas the first point of contact for our students.
Meanwhile, the face-to-face sessions are a chance to meet fellow students, build friendships and expand your professional network. Theyll also give you opportunities to arrange individual supervision, and attend live seminars and guest lectures.
We'll encourage you to develop your skills as an independent learner and researcher, with evidence-based policing and research skills embedded across the whole degree. Our optional modules allow you to specialise in areas of interest such as vulnerability, digital policing, organised crime or counter-terrorism.
Your studies will be further enhanced by our Policing Institute for the Eastern Region (PIER). Based in Chelmsford, PIER forms a hub for our policing projects, and organises regular lectures as well other networking events.
