    Applied Statistics and Empirical Methods

    About

Statistics play an increasingly important role in science, commerce and industry due to the increasing availability of data in all these areas. In many cases, data are of considerable heterogeneity and complexity, so statistical methods are an important means of extracting knowledge from the information provided by the data. In this sense, statistics is one of the key disciplines in the information era and statistics competencies are a prerequisite for scientific progress. The doctoral degree programme in "Applied Statistics and Empirical Methods" is jointly provided by the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Biology and Psychology, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Economic Sciences for the development of early career researchers in the area of statistics and their fields of application in various disciplines of natural, life and social sciences. The PhD programme is hosted by the Centre for Statistics, and it offers profound statistical training at the PhD level. It is accompanied by a PhD thesis carried out in the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Biology and Psychology, Economic Sciences, Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology, Medicine, and Social Sciences. The programme offers lectures, lab courses and professional training. The programme consists of five major parts dealing with (i) statistical methods, (ii) specialisation, (iii) research seminars, (iv) summer schools and conferences and (v) general skills training. The selection of courses is determined individually in accordance with students' backgrounds and interests. To foster interdisciplinarity, students are encouraged to acquire cross-disciplinary, methodological knowledge.
