    About

    A minor in Arabic is required for the profiles Islamic Studies/Arabic Studies in an Asian Studies major. The minor in Arabic provides students with sound basic knowledge of spoken and written Arabic. The initial focus is on modern standard Arabic. In addition to developing the reading skills needed to study source texts, Arabic language instruction strongly emphasizes auditory and oral skills as well as the production of written texts. Students acquire the language basics for scientific text-context analysis, which is applied to Arabic texts of various provenance. With these basic language skills students are able to adequately express themselves and communicate in accordance with their expertise as well as academic and language standards (also in the foreign language). Key elements of the study of Arabic include the introduction to the Arabic script, the essential fundamentals of Arabic grammar, a basic vocabulary of modern standard Arabic, elementary oral and written skills for the reception and production of texts (reading, writing, listening, speaking), as well as an introduction to at least one main Arabic dialect. This subject must be combined with a second subject. Possible lines of work: Intercultural communication, intercultural management, international development cooperation, peace and conflict research, international educational work (adult education, language courses, etc.), politics (policy consulting), culture (conservation/maintenance/management of global cultural heritage, cultural institutions, culture management, museums, etc.), tourism (long-distance, educational and cultural tourism), journalism, academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.) Job options strongly depend on a graduates chosen major.
