About

Course overview

This course is a design-based masters degree that provides advanced training in integrated environmental design and sustainability in the built environment. The course will equip you with the necessary skills to integrate environmental and sustainable design principles from an early stage in the design process, enabling you to deliver truly sustainable buildings.

The course builds on a unique project-based approach, with emphasis on the integration of technical and theoretical knowledge and skills in building design studio. This course is suitable for those with training in architecture and other building design subjects, with a deep sense of responsibility toward creating a more habitable planet for current and future generations.

Portfolio

Applicants to all MArch programmes are required to submit a portfolio of their design work with their application. The portfolio enables us to see that you have some of the core skills required to be successful on an MArch course and to see the range of skills and types of projects that you have completed in your undergraduate degree and during any professional experience.

The portfolio should be submitted with your admissions application and be in PDF format and less than 50Mb (please submit this directly onto the MyNottingham admissions system).

The portfolio should have:

a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 pages
a letter confirming that this is your own work, coming from a tutor or course teacher who has been responsible for you and should be on institution headed paper for academic work, or from your practice director or line manager for any professional work
a front cover stating your full name

The portfolio should contain:

examples of a few design projects that you have completed as part of your taught university education and/or professional practice experience
clear demonstration of your design skills, such as plans, sections, perspectives, physical and computer models, etc
images from any architectural, urban, planning or landscape projects that you have completed in your studies or professional practice experience
you may also include a few sketches, paintings, photographs, still life or life drawings to show your skills (maximum two pages)

Portfolios will be judged on whether you have the architectural design skills to enter a specialised postgraduate degree programme. We want to see a keen sense of judgement and spatial awareness in your work, and an ability to graphically display this.

IELTS6.5 (no less than 6.0 in each element)

English language requirementsAs well as IELTS (listed above), we also accept other English language qualifications. This includes TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB and O level English.

Additional information

Following the completion of the course you will be able to apply for the UK Government Graduate Immigration Route. The route will allow you to apply for a visa to remain in the UK for two years after your studies so you can look for work or start work at any skill level, or three years if you have completed a PhD.

Staying in the UK to work after your degree allows you to apply the knowledge and skills you've learned in your course. Meeting our English language requirements

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a presessional English course. Presessional courses teach you academic skills in addition to English language. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

Visa restrictions

International students must have valid UK immigration permissions for any courses or study period where teaching takes place in the UK. Student route visas can be issued for eligible students studying full-time courses. The University of Nottingham does not sponsor a student visa for students studying part-time courses. The Standard Visitor visa route is not appropriate in all cases. Please contact the university’s Visa and Immigration team if you need advice about your visa options.

English Program Requirements

We accept a variety of English language tests and qualifications. The;International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test is one of the most common. The IELTS test includes grades in listening, reading, writing and speaking, plus an overall grade. IELTS requirements for each of our courses are listed in our;course listings.

We also accept Pearson Test of English (PTE) and TOEFL (IBT) test certificates. Check the table below against the IELTS requirement listed in our course listings to see what grade you will need. You can also;meet our entry requirements through a;presessional English course;with our Centre for English Language Education (CELE).

Each year 1,100 employers advertise graduate jobs and internships through our online vacancy service. We host regular careers fairs, including specialist fairs for different sectors.

International students who complete an eligible degree programme in the UK on a student visa can apply to stay and work in the UK after their course under the Graduate immigration route. Eligible courses at the University of Nottingham include bachelors, masters and research degrees, and PGCE courses.

You will have a chance to apply for these when available.
