    About

Develop essential theoretical and practical skills for a career in architecture with the Master of Architecture at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Graduates of this 60- to 90-credit, professionally accredited architecture degree program are prepared to engage in the practice of architecture. The program meets the educational requirement for professional registration in all 55 U.S. jurisdictions through a rigorous course of study that examines urgent urban, architectural, environmental and"¯sociocultural"¯topics.

Master of Architecture students will join a welcoming, diverse community of individuals studying allied fields of city and regional planning, landscape architecture and more. Guided by a faculty of practicing designers and innovative researchers, students are pushed to work collaboratively and use the urban context of Philadelphia as a starting point to engage issues ranging from advocacy and technology to sustainability, human health and the global context of architectural design.

The curriculum is centered on design studios that require the synthesis and application of knowledge from other coursework. Seminars in building history/theory, professional practice, research and technology to address questions in tandem with design studios. Elective courses allow students to pursue specializations with focus and intent. Together, the architecture courses satisfy professional accreditation requirements. During their final year of study, students may pursue a self-directed research and design thesis.

Tyler School of Art and Architecture offers three tracks for the Master of Architecture degree. Students enroll in a one-, two- or three-year program depending on their educational background upon entry to the degree. All applicants apply directly to the program and are placed in the appropriate track based on a thorough review of all application materials.

    • The +1 undergraduate/graduate accelerated track enables eligible students to complete the 60-credit MArch degree within 15 months after receiving a Bachelor of Science in Architecture pre-professional degree from Tyler.

    • The two-year track (4+2) is a 60-credit degree program open to students who have completed a pre-professional degree in architecture, either the Tyler Architecture BS program or a course-equivalent program.

    • The three-year track is a curriculum of up to 90 credits open to any student who has completed a bachelor's degree but does not have a pre-professional degree in architecture. The first year of this program provides a rigorous introduction to architectural design that consists of up to 30 credits of pre-professional studies, including building technology courses, design studios, and history and theory seminars.

    How to Apply

There are important details to keep in mind as you complete and submit your application to Temple University.

    1. Apply using one of two methods.

Choose one of the following two methods to apply.

    1. Online Application

Submit an online application and pay the nonrefundable $60 application fee online using either a credit card or a bank account drawn on U.S. funds.

    2. Paper Application

Download the PDF application and save it to your device. (Adobe Acrobat is required for access.) You can write on the form, save the final version, and then print for mailing. If you have questions while completing the paper form, refer to the application instructions. Before mailing, enclose a check or money order made payable to Temple University, in the amount of $75, drawn on a U.S. bank. The application fee cannot be refunded.

    2. Ensure you use the same name on your application and standardized tests.

Use the exact same name on your application that you used when registering for your standardized tests. Slight differences in your name can cause your application to go unmatched with your reported test scores and delay the processing of your application.

    3. Submit all supporting credentials.

Submit the documentation you have been gathering for your application. You can find the correct mailing address or alternate electronic submission information on the degree program’s "Contacts" page in the Graduate Bulletin. All application materials, including portfolios and exhibits, become the property of Temple University and will not be copied, forwarded to another institution or returned.

    4. Contact the department with any questions.

If you have any questions about your application, contact the program or department directly. Admissions decisions are made by the department based on your complete application profile, which includes grades, test scores, recommendations, statement of goals, research interests, past employment, portfolio and more.

    5. Check the status of your application.

Remember that your application is reviewed only after it is complete. You can check the status of your application and materials by returning to the application system through which you applied.
