    About

The goal of the Jewelry and Metalwork major at the University of Georgia is for every student to embrace the intrinsic nature of jewel and metal materials and their processes as a vehicle toward self-expression.

Students take courses that 1) build an appreciation for the history of jewelry and metals from body adornment to ritualistic and functional objects, and 2) develop competency of the various techniques associated with metalsmithing, fabrication, lost wax casting, raising, forging, stonesetting, blacksmithing, and numerous forming and surface embellishment processes.  A professional portfolio exit project is required which can be used toward application to graduate school or the jewelry/metals profession.

Career opportunities are available in education, industry as a designer or jeweler, museums, and restoration.  Many graduates pursue self-employment as an artist/craftsman for a private studio, galleries, small business, or public and private commission.

    How to Apply

UGA supports two different application platforms for First-Year applications. Students should only submit one of these applications. We do not prefer any particular application platform, so please select the option that works best for you and your school counselor. While we are still members of the Coalition for College, we will not be accepting applications on that platform for students applying for Fall 2023.
