    Artificial intelligence program

    About

As complex as it is nascent, artifical intelligence necessitates particular skill sets that are currently limited in the workforce. Wayne State's master of science program in artificial intelligence (AI) will bolster the talent pipeline into a global industry projected to surpass $1.6 trillion by 2030. The interdisciplinary nature of the program provides students with a distinct learning experience involving a variety of engineering disciplines, enhancing their creativity and problem-solving across diverse domains.

    About

This M.S. program provides students with a broad foundation in AI, combined with experience in in-depth application areas. This approach offers students the skills and knowledge to succeed in spaces where rapid adoption of these burgeoning technologies is most evident, including manufacturing, health care, retail, aerospace, automotive and logistics.

    Curriculum

The interdisciplinary M.S. in artifical intelligence is organized into three concentration tracks.  Students will enter into one of the three concentration tracks.

    • AI hardware and systems, hosted by Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)
    • AI algorithm and systems, hosted by Computer Science (CS)
    • Industrial AI, hosted by Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE)

    Degree requirements

The master's degree in artificial intelligence is offered under the following options:

    • Plan A (thesis option): 24 course credit hours plus a 6-credit hour master's thesis
    • Plan C (course work option): A minimum of 30 credits of course work required

Plan A is intended for students planning to go on to pursue a Doctoral degree.

All courses must be graduate-level courses offered in the College of Engineering.

    Admission requirements

Applicants must meet the Graduate School requirements for admission. Students must have a bachelor's degree or the equivalent in Engineering from an accredited college or university. The program will consider students from all science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines for admission.

All applicants are required to be admitted to the Graduate School, the College of Engineering and a department within the college, and meet all applicable admission requirements, including a minimum grade point average of 2.75 for regular admission and 2.5 to 2.74 for qualified admission. Professional experience will also be considered for admission.

The ECE, CSC and IE departments in the College of Engineering will administer each track. Students applying for an M.S. in artifical intelligence must meet the application requirements of the department administering the track to which they are applying.

Admission to the program is also contingent upon satisfying the following requirements:

    1. No other supplemental admission documents are required. However, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose and professional resume/CV may be submitted to aid the admission evaluation process.
    2. All applicants who have earned degrees from a country where English is not the native language must demonstrate English proficiency via a qualified examination. Applicants must earn a minimum score of 79 from the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or 550 from a paper-based TOEFL (pBT), an IELTS score of 6.5, or an overall Duolingo score of 125.
    3. International applicants are required to submit an official course-by-course transcript evaluation. Accepted evaluation services include WES, ECE or SpanTran. Note that the official transcript evaluation must be transmitted directly from the evaluating agency to the WSU Office of Graduate Admissions. The transcript evaluation will serve as your official transcript.
    4. All applicants must pay the $50 application fee.

AGRADE students who demonstrate competency are able to take graduate courses as an undergraduate student. The M.S. in AI program is bound by the applicable standards and policies of the University, allowing AGRADE and transfer credits to count toward meeting application core requirements and apply them directly to the 30-credit requirement for the M.S. in AI degree, with approval by the committee.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

International applicants must complete the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree, including all state and external/internal examinations required for the degree. Some three-year general degrees (from Canada, India, Pakistan, France, Lebanon, etc.) may not be equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree. However, if you have completed an honors degree, additional undergraduate coursework beyond the three-year bachelor's degree, or a graduate degree, you may be considered for admission.

If you are applying to a master's program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 2.75 or its equivalent in upper division coursework. If you are applying to a doctoral program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or its equivalent in upper division coursework.

    Submit your transcript(s)

To begin the application review, upload unofficial copies of English-translated international transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions from which you earned a bachelor's degree or higher, including Mark Sheets, if applicable. If you are admitted, you must submit an official course-by-course academic evaluation of your completed bachelor's degree.

    Demonstrate English proficiency

Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate English proficiency by meeting the minimum requirements. You are required to submit an official qualifying score meeting minimum Graduate School requirements. Send official test scores to Wayne State University Graduate Admissions, using the school code 1898.

To begin the application review, upload an unofficial copy of your English proficiency test score(s). Once admitted, an official test score must be submitted to Graduate Admissions.
