    About

    Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who work closely with physicians to not only administer preventive and emergency injury care for athletes and physically active individuals, but also follow through by setting up the treatment regimen and rehabilitation protocol.

    There are currently two routes to obtaining an athletic training degree from The University of Tulsa: a five-year accelerated Bachelor's to Master's program, and a two-year Post-Baccalaureate master's program. Athletic training students of both programs gain experience under the direct supervision of faculty and professional staff, all of whom are BOC certified and Oklahoma licensed athletic trainers. These experiences take place in a variety of settings including Division 1 athletics at The University of Tulsa, orthopedic clinics, high schools and occupational/industrial settings as a part of the required supervised practice. Students may also have the opportunity to work with professional sports teams and other special events.

    Athletic Training The University of Tulsa's Master of Athletic Training degree combines academic course work and supervised practice experience that prepare students to prevent, evaluate, diagnose, provide immediate care and rehabilitate orthopedic injuries and illnesses. In addition to the course work, athletic training students gain experience under the direct supervision of certified and state-licensed athletic trainers. These experiences take place in a variety of settings including Division 1 athletics at The University of Tulsa, orthopedic clinics, local high schools and occupational and industrial settings. In the final semester, students have an opportunity to choose a national or local internship as their capstone educational experience.

    Overview

    Employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 21 percent through 2028, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Most career opportunities for certified athletic trainers are found in sports medicine/orthopedic clinics, universities, colleges, high schools and industrial settings. Historically, athletic trainers have worked with athletes in organized sports. In the traditional setting, the athletic trainer must work closely with the coaching staff, the team physician and the athlete to coordinate an effective rehabilitation program.

    In recent years, the profession has branched out, and now athletic trainers provide services to recreational athletes and others injured due to physical activity, such as accidents in the workplace. Certified athletic trainers are employed by the military, Cirque du Soleil, Ford, Disneyland and other corporations to provide rehabilitation services to injured employees and to develop and implement prevention.

    Mission Statement

    The mission of the Athletic Training program is to prepare students for professional service in a health care setting and provide opportunities for professional assimilation and involvement, while instilling an understanding of the importance of life-long learning. The mission will be achieved through the following goals and learning outcomes.

    Entry Requirements

    Who is Eligible to Apply? 

    If you have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale, you may apply to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

    A master's degree is not required to apply for a Ph.D. at Yale, although some programs give preference to applicants with post-baccalaureate training. Consult your program of interest directly for information on how it evaluates applications.

    • $105 application fee or fee waiver. 
    • Standardized tests. GRE requirements vary by program. TOEFL or IELTS are necessary for most non-native English speakers.

    English Program Requirements

    TOEFL or IELTS is required of most applicants whose native language is not English.

    If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS

    No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g. M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.) from any institution.

    When you complete your application, you will answer questions about your native language and the primary language of instruction at your baccalaureate institution. If either was English, you will not be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when you submit your application. No separate documentation is necessary. 

    Although the Graduate School does not have set test minimums for admission, individual departments use these test scores as part of their holistic review of your application. Please check with the department to which you are applying to see if they have a minimum requirement. The Graduate School does require incoming doctoral students who received a score of 25 or below on the TOEFL Speaking section or a 7.5 or below on IELTS Speaking section to participate in a Summer English Language program at Yale in August prior to matriculation. These students are required to demonstrate English proficiency before they are permitted to teach.

    How to Apply

    Identify the program and degree you want.

    Decide if you will apply for a Ph.D. or a terminal Master’s (M.S., M.A., M.A.S.) in one of the programs available at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. (Note that you will earn one or more Master's degrees en route to a Ph.D.) Learn about the program: its faculty, course offerings, and resources. Read the faculty's research publications. If you can identify and articulate why the program is a good fit for you and show how your preparation and interests align well with it, you will have a strong application.

    A note to students applying to one of Yale’s professional schools or programs:

  • If you are applying for a Ph.D. in Architecture, Environment, Investigative Medicine, Law, Management, Music, Nursing, or Public Health, or for an M.S. in Public Health, or an M.A. in Music, be sure to use the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Ph.D./Master's application.
  • If you are applying for any other degree at one of the University’s professional schools (Art, Architecture, Divinity, Drama, Environment, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, Nursing, and Public Health), visit that school’s website for further instructions. Those programs have separate admissions policies and processes that are administered by the professional schools, not GSAS.
  • Verify the application deadline for your program.

    Application deadlines vary by program, so please see Dates and Deadlines for information about your program of interest. All new students enroll in the fall, and the admissions process begins nearly a year in advance of matriculation.

    Determine what standardized tests you need to take. Register early.

    Some Ph.D. and Master’s degree programs require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Check your program's standardized testing requirement before you apply. In addition, applicants whose native language is not English may need to take an English Language test (TOEFL or IELTS).
