    Are you Interested In how to make cars better, safer, cleaner and more sustainable? The automotive industry, which includes successful manufacturers like Nissan, Honda and Jaguar Land Rover, needs engineers who can work on design, production, and research and development.

    The Automotive Engineering BEng (Hons) programme will equip you with the practical skills and expertise required for a successful career as a practising automotive engineer, with the full educational basis to facilitate progression to engineering management roles.

    You will have the opportunity to explore contemporary automotive engineering through a variety of modules and project-based work, with an optional year in industry during your third year. You will be taught and assisted by a well-rounded team of experienced practitioners, leading researchers, and a knowledgeable technical support team. Equipped with industry standard lab facilities, the course will provide you with an exciting and practical learning experience to apply engineering principles to real-world problems. 

    Equipped with cutting edge lab infrastructure, the programme seeks to provide exciting and practical learning experiences to apply engineering principles to real-world problems.  The programme is designed to build your confidence and skills base and will equip you with an awareness of automotive engineering in the wider social, ethical, sustainable, and economic context. You will be facilitated to explore many engineering options and not be limited by conventional approaches or established solutions but rather to challenge convention where appropriate.   

    This BEng (Hons) course will meet part of the academic requirement to be a Chartered Engineer, which is associated with higher salaries. You can meet the requirement in full by studying for an additional year and gaining a MEng (Hons). If you know from the start that youd prefer a MEng, please apply for MEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering instead of this course.  

    An optional placement year [MB1] is embedded into the programme to offer the opportunity to gain invaluable industrial and international experience and further demonstrate compliance with professional practice competencies set by IMechE.  Our students benefit from close links with industry and engagement with IMechEs North East and Young Members Network and our graduates work in leading multi-national employers such as Exxon Mobil, Caterpillar, Nissan, Airbus, British Engines and GE.

    English Program Requirements

    International applicants should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent*).

    Employability is embedded at all years within the Automotive Engineering programme at Northumbria.  Our teaching focuses on the authentic application of professional knowledge and skills through independent enquiry-based learning approaches and collaboration with industry and professional bodies.

    Enhancing your employment prospects and developing links with industry are important aspects of the Automotive Engineering programme.  Between your second and third years of study you will have the opportunity to undertake an industrial placement, or to study abroad, which provide you with invaluable industrial or international experience.

    Academic staff will work with you to help you understand and explore the different types of careers suited to a graduate engineer and assist you in identifying possible avenues for you to explore. Our dedicated Careers and Employment Service will also support you in finding and securing part-time employment during your studies, placement opportunities, and full-time employment on completion of your programme.

    Upon graduation, you will be in an excellent position to become a practising automotive engineer with the skills for progression into both technical and engineering management roles.

    How to Apply

    Bookings for September 2022 are now open.

    Visit the Student Portal to start your booking and select your bedroom. We guarantee accommodation to all students, including those joining Northumbria University on a Foundation programme.

     

    You can book accommodation in five easy steps:

    1. Confirm Northumbria University as your Firm/First choice University.

    If you are applying via UCAS, please log into UCAS Track and accept your course offer as Firm. Please note this might take up-to 48h to be updated on the University system.

    If you are a direct entry applicant, please visit the Applicant Portal to review and accept your course offer. To learn more about the process and the required steps, you can visit the After You Apply page. 

    2. Visit the Student Portal and log in to the Accommodation section where you can start your booking.

    Wait up-to 48 hours for your course acceptance to be recorded and using your applicant portal login details (you will have received this via email when you applied) select the Accommodation section to start your application.

    Top Tip: Make sure you register with your personal email address and not one associated to a school/college. School/College email addresses are often closed after you leave and can delay the process.

    3. Select your bedroom

    Select the exact bedroom you want to live in based on real-time availability by using our self-selection system. Browse through the available options and see the exact location of your bedroom. You can also see some general details about your flatmates, such age, country of origin, course and level of study.

    Did you know? If you are a postgraduate student, the booking system will automatically show you available flats with other postgraduate students or students who might be in their final year.  

    4. Complete your contract 

    Once you are happy with your room selection, you are required to sign a tenancy agreement to accept and confirm your accommodation booking. This is completed online and you receive a confirmation email with all relevant documents. 

    Top Tip: Make sure you read your contract carefully as it is a legally binding contract. If you don’t understand anything, get in touch, we will be happy to run through it with you.

    5. Pay your advance rent payment

    The final step of your booking is making an advance rent payment of £250. Once the payment has been made, the room is secured for you. This payment is part of your total accommodation cost and is used towards your final rent payment. 

     

    Once you've completed the process above, the room is secured for you. You will also get access to our dedicated Facebook groups to help you connect with flatmates before you arrive.
