UK airlines contribute over £11bn to the economy and support around 200,000 jobs. This programme focusses on the management of the airport, airline and ancillary businesses, providing you with a broad understanding of this exciting industry and training in the core competencies you will need for a career in aviation management. Based airside at Leeds Bradford Airport, you will study adjacent to an airport which contributes £336m to the local economy each year, which generates 2,350 direct jobs and has 3.6m passengers per annum with strong growth prospects. Many students find employment with Leeds Bradford Airport, whilst others use the airport experience as a basis for global careers. The Aviation Management & Operations FD is ideal if you are looking to pursue a career in aviation or if you are already employed in the industry wishing to move into management. The College’s physical proximity to aviation employers is matched by good working relationships which have led to a number of initiatives and developed sustainable relationships with employers, delivering education and training according to their needs. The College works directly with aviation companies including Jet2.com, Swissport and the Airport Authorities to ensure that as a student you have the most current knowledge and opportunities. You will be taught through a combination of lectures, guest speakers, visits and seminar sessions, which will be supported through group discussion and activities. Alongside course contact hours, you will be expected to undertake 10-12 hours independent study each week such as reading journal articles and books, undertaking research from academic and technical texts and preparing for assessments, presentations or examinations. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Moodle, an online electronic resource platform managed by your module tutors alongside the Learning Hubs at the Aviation Academy and Aireville Campus and the College’s Specialist Support Centre. The average class size for this course is 15-20. The course includes Work Related Learning modules that introduce realistic workplace scenarios and case studies. Students are encouraged to secure placement/s within airlines, airports, flying clubs or ground handling agents to help provide operational context to the classroom-based studies. A Foundation Degree is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and is equal to the first two years of the full BSc (Hons) course. Once you complete your Aviation Management & Operations FD you can progress onto a third and final year to complete the Air Transport Management BSc (Hons).
