    Bachelor of Biomedical Science

    About

Advance the progress of medical science. And your career potential.

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science focuses on the basic knowledge of the structure and function of the human body, preparing students for a career in a wide range of biomedical fields. Students will gain ‘career-ready’ skills in purpose-built laboratories and graduate well prepared to collaborate on scientific investigations of human structure and function in health and disease at a molecular, cellular and whole systems level.

Graduates may work as cutting-edge medical researchers contributing to advancements in the diagnosis and management of disease, as experts in commercialisation, testing and development of innovative medical therapies, or as medical science communicators. With further postgraduate training, graduates may also become medical practitioners with enhanced research capabilities, or medical laboratory scientists.

A Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Newcastle will give you the opportunity to study a wide range of courses. You will be exposed to varying modes of study including face-to-face and online learning. We also offer plenty of hands-on experience in clinical laboratories and industry environments.

Students will study core courses in biomedical science that provide advanced theoretical knowledge in:

    • Anatomy
    • Bioinformatics
    • Cell and molecular biology
    • Experimental design and analysis
    • Genetics and immunology
    • Medical biochemistry
    • Microbiology
    • Neuroscience
    • Nutritional science
    • Pathophysiology
    • Pharmacology
    • Physiology

These core courses maximise flexibility for students and provide a solid base of knowledge and skills in the biomedical disciplines.

    Honours

Furthering your study in biomedical science with an Honours degree will equip you with highly sought after and respected skills and knowledge, giving you a competitive advantage.

With increasing competition in all sectors of employment, students who graduate with an Honours degree have a distinct advantage. It is often considered by employers as an added skill and has been used by previous graduates to pursue higher positions and salaries. Honours also sets the foundations of potential for further academic study, such as a PhD, or improving your chances of gaining entry into other degrees.

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) is a one-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) degree that allows you to complete research in a topic of interest within biomedical science.
