    About

    The Bachelor of Economics with Honours degree allows students who have completed a Bachelor of Economics degree, a year of study to develop a body of knowledge in a specific context as further preparation to undertake professional work and/or as a pathway for Masters degree or Doctorate in the future.

    This on-campus, 1-year full-time or 2-year part-time honours degree course is offered through the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (TSBE) at Hobart.

    The aim of the honours year is to enable you to further develop your research and communication skills and to provide a foundation for postgraduate study in either Economics or Finance.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Admission to Honours courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor's degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer. Admission is conditional on research project and supervisor availability.

    English Language Requirements

    For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided.     Course Specific Requirements

    Entry to the Bachelor of Economics Honours program is open to students who have completed:

    • Bachelor of Economics with Society and Environment major with a minimum of 65 average in four level 300 Economics units and a minimum of 65 in BEA242; OR
    • Bachelor of Economics with Industry, Policy and Business Strategy major with a minimum of 65 average in four level 300 Economics units; OR
    • Bachelor of Business with Business Economics major with a minimum of 65 average in four level 300 Economics units and a minimum of 65 inBEA242; OR
    • Equivalent approved program.

    English Program Requirements

    • All methods of meeting University of Tasmania English language requirements have a validity period of 2 years unless involving a country specific qualification as listed below.
    • Each course offered by the University of Tasmania has a minimum English language requirement for entry as listed below. Applicants must also meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
    • Applicants who qualify from a University of Tasmania program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency's English language registration standard.
    • In exceptional circumstances or cases not covered by the categories outlined below, multiple forms of evidence may be considered on a case by case basis by the Executive Director, Student Operations in consultation with the Director, Academic Quality and Standards.
    • The University reserves the right to require that any applicant be required to undergo a test of English language.

    The Bachelor of Economics (Hons) degree opens up many career opportunities and past graduates have established careers in a wide range of activities. Some examples include: central banking, commercial consulting, commercial banking, local government, administration, management, market research, merchant banking, political advising, stockbroking and teaching.

    If you successfully complete this course, you may be also be eligible to apply for a range of other postgraduate courses including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research.

    Professional Recognition

    While studying students can apply to become student members of the Economic Society of Australia.
