    The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Degree with Honours) is an esteemed program that supports you to develop research skills and deepen your understanding of contemporary creative practice and theoretical discourse.

    This dynamic one-year program seeks to introduce Honours candidates of proven ability and aptitude to research training, developing your critical thinking, creative drive, and capacity to devise, define and manage a major creative research project. The degree emphasises rigorous, independent, practice-led research – work that links critical curiosity and creative enquiry to encourage a deeper understanding and capacity in your chosen field.

    You can choose from one of the following specialisations:

    • Film and Television
    • Visual Art
    • Design and Production (Please note, this specialisation will not be offering a 2025 intake)
    • Music Theatre (Please note, this specialisation will not be offering a 2025 intake)
    • Dance (Please note, this specialisation will not be offering a 2025 intake)
    • Theatre (Please note, this specialisation will not be offering a 2025 intake)

    In each, you'll undertake a year-long project under the guidance of your individual supervisor.

    Our program is located in the Southbank campus, a world class teaching and learning facility at the heart of Melbourne’s arts precinct and with strong connections across disciplines that span a diverse range of professional partnerships and networks. Academic staff in the program are leading practitioners in their field.

    Graduate pathways

    This degree provides you with a pathway to a masters or PhD research degree, and also strengthens your foundations for a professional career in the creative arts.

    Applicants interested in Animation and/or Screenwriting should apply to the Film and Television specialisation.

    Entry Requirements

    Minimum eligibility

    You’re considered an international student based on your citizenship – even if you're studying in Australia.

    Masters

    You must have completed an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) from a recognised institution. Most Masters degrees also require a minimum WAM (Weighted Average Mark)based on your previous studies for entry. You can use our graduate coursework grade conversion eligibility calculator to get an indication of whether you’re eligible for a specific Masters degree.

    Depending on your previous studies and experience you could also be eligible for credit towards your studies at the University.

    Doctorates

    If you go on to a doctorate, you need to have completed an Honours and Masters degree in the relevant discipline. Additional qualifications and work experience is also taken into consideration.

    English Program Requirements

    English Language Criteria

    For applicants who have not completed the Victorian Certificate of Education or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the undergraduate English language requirements must be met.

    Career

    Having furthered your understanding of your major area of study and your individual research-based practice, you may continue toward advanced practice in your chosen field, or follow a pathway into graduate research programs such as the Master in Fine Arts by Research or Doctor of Philosophy (Fine Arts and Music).

    Practitioners completing Honours often go on to work in education-related contexts alongside their professional career, as teaching artists/designers or in the educational areas of cultural organisations.
