    The honours program develops an understanding of research design and scientific method to facilitate the completion of a substantive research project which focuses on theory, applied research and professional practice. This culminates in the production of a thesis that integrates and synthesises the research outcomes and contributes to knowledge in the field of sport and exercise science.

    Admission requirements

    Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline at an appropriate level.

    Examples include:

    • Successful completion of the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science (including C10300, C10302, C10328) or Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management (including C10301, C10303), with a credit average or better in the final two full-time sessions.
    • In exceptional cases, consideration is given to applicants who have completed the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management or Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science at a pass level. In such cases, outstanding professional achievements are taken into account. Such achievements include, but are not limited to;
      • extended periods of employment in the sport and exercise industry gaining substantive experience in the sport and exercise landscape relevant to their proposed project or,
      • bespoke knowledge in a certain area of sport and exercise science gained from completing a specialist undergraduate elective or capstone project.
    • Successful completion of a comparable non-UTS course that meets the above criteria will also be considered.

    The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

    International students

    Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

    Adding an honours year to your degree will develop higher level skills that set you apart and improve your employment opportunities. Honours students can also pathway into higher level degrees such as a Masters or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Career options include exercise science, sports science, corporate health and fitness, physical activity, strength and conditioning, research assistant, health promotion (e.g. for general population or aged care), sports coaching or training (e.g. in schools or sporting clubs), sports development and sports management (including government roles in planning and policy). Students who progress to the level of PhD may find career opportunities in higher education institutions such as TAFE or University. This could include lecturing, research or coordination of work experience programs.
