    About

    As you earn a degree in biochemistry at WPI, you'll study and unravel the complicated chemical processes of living organisms and make important discoveries at the intersection of chemistry and biologyall to make a real-world difference. You will be exposed to the cutting edge in Biochemistry, both in the classroom and through hands-on experience via lab and project work that brings the excitement of scientific inquiry to life. A major in biochemistry will also give you access to state-of-the-art facilitiesincluding our Life Sciences and Bioengineering Centerfrom day one. You won't just ask questions about everything from how cells respond to drugs to how we can use artificial photosynthesis to create renewable energyyou'll answer them too.
    Our degree in biochemistry will deepen your knowledge and give you hands-on experience using scientific tools and techniques to further your understanding of the processes and transformations that occur in living organisms. You will study foundational and advanced topics in biochemistry, biology, and chemistry, as well as mathematical sciences and physics. Throughout your program, you will have many opportunities to apply your knowledge through project work and laboratory research aimed at tackling real-world challenges. If you're interested in pursuing a health-related career, the degree requirements for the biochemistry major at WPI include all technical courses needed for admission to medical, dental, and veterinary schools.
    At WPI students are immersed in applying their knowledge to solve significant problems through hands-on projects, both in the classroom and in communities around the globe. Biochemistry majors might find themselves working on projects ranging from novel treatment strategies for pancreatic and breast cancer to the development of protein tools that can control neurons and muscles with light.

    Requirements

    English Program Requirements

    International applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency through one of the following exams:

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):  Recommended score of 90 with no sub-score below 20
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Recommended score of 7.0 with no band below 6.5
    • Duolingo English Test Recommended score of 115
    • PTE  (Pearson’s Test of English): Recommended score of 61

    WPI Undergraduate Admissions will also consider  Initialview  or  Vericant interviews if submitted. These interviews are optional and serve as a supplement to one of the exams mentioned above, but alone they do not satisfy our English proficiency requirement.

    How to Apply

    Step #1: Submit Application

    First year candidates: Complete your application through the Common Application. Make sure you share who you are and what makes you a fit for WPI, and check over your answers. We encourage you to review our college application timeline checklist to put your best foot forward!

    Transfer candidates: Complete the WPI Transfer Application. Make sure to also review important entrance and application requirements. Additional helpful information can also be found by reviewing frequently asked questions.

    No matter which type of student you are, be sure to use an email address that you check frequently when filling out your application. Keep in mind that many high schools block external emails, so we recommend using your personal email address if you have one. This email will be the main method of contact that WPI uses to reach you throughout the application process.

    Step #2: Request Required Materials

    Request your required high school transcripts and letters of recommendation while completing your Common Application. WPI is a test-blind institution, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not part of the WPI application. We do require:

    • Official transcripts sent from high school
      • Transfer applicants must also submit college/university transcripts 
    • School counselor letter of recommendation
    • Teacher letter of recommendation
    • Early Decision applicants are required to submit the Early Decision Agreement

    Step #3: Review Application

    Once you submit your application, watch your email for a receipt from WPI. Check your status online to confirm you are not missing any information needed to review your application.
