    The Department of Biology and Marine Biology at UNCW strives to prepare all students to make sound judgments based on a solid foundation of biological principles.

    Our department focuses on four ideals:

    • Coupling excellent teaching with diverse research opportunities.
    • Emphasizing current theories of Biological Science, knowledge of basic investigative skills, and methods of critical inquiry.
    • Centering our research programs the biological phenomena that impact life in our region and beyond.
    • Lending our professional expertise to all endeavors that work for the improvement of our environment and the human condition.

    Flexibility

    The B.A. Biology is a flexible degree program that can be designed by the student and advisor to meet personal educational goals or specific licensure requirements on both the undergraduate/graduate level.

    Understand basic biological experimental design and quantitative methods

    Utilize and critique biological literature to examine scientific questions

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • Completed online application.
      • Fall Deadline: April 1
      • Spring Deadline: October 15
    • Non-refundable $80 application fee (check or money order in U.S. dollars and drawn on a U.S. bank, payable to UNCW).
    • Official high school (secondary school) transcript, translated into English (translation must be certified).
    • Translated transcripts from institutions attended beyond secondary school.
      • If the applicant wishes to receive academic credit, these transcripts (unless from a U.S. institution) must be evaluated by an accredited credential evaluation service. The applicant must choose a company that belongs to the National Association of Credential Evaluators (NACES).
    • TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, or Pearson Test of English score unless:
      • English is applicant's native language.
      • Applicant has completed 2 college-level courses in English composition at a U.S. college or university with a grade of B or higher.
      • A student successfully completes Level 4 in UNCW's ESL program.

    Provide expert assessment and advisory services for their clients on matters pertaining to the management of environmental issues. (Source)

    Research and test medications and chemical compounds for the development of drug therapies, the prevention of drug interactions, and more (Source)

    Study humans, plants, animals and the environments in which they live. Conduct human medical research, plant research, animal research or environmental system research at the cellular level or the ecosystem level or anywhere between. (Source)

    Common Application: Application option 1 for future first-year students.
    UNCW Application: Application option 3 for future first-year students and students enrolling in an online accelerated program such as RN to BSN or RRT to BSRT.
