    Business Computing and IT

    About

This degree will develop your understanding of the management and communication of information, as well as the human, managerial and technical considerations.

You will learn the role that information technology plays in modern business environments and societies, and how technology can be the key to solving some of their biggest challenges.

Our four year course, integrated with a placement year, will develop your IT knowledge and give you the skills needed to provide businesses with consultative support, strategic direction and technological insight. There is also an option to gain a double degree (two degrees for the price of one).

This course will provide you with theoretical knowledge and skills, including analysis and problem-solving, which can be applied to a broad range of career paths.

You will learn the relationship between technical knowledge and human design, the complex role of IT in business, and how technology can be used to drive competitive advantage.

In your first year you will develop a general knowledge of business theories as well as computing and IT. Your second year is focused on building your IT and computing skills. This will help you as you apply for placement opportunities in your third year.

The final year includes both compulsory and elective modules and builds on the knowledge and skills gathered during the placement year and facilitates cultivating advanced skillsets relevant to the contemporary business environment. This will include, and not limited to project management, emerging technology trends, and information security. Furthermore, the final year project dissertation enables you to put your skills and knowledge into practice, through collaborative, peer and self-directed learning, working on real-life case studies and applications, which are aligned to your individual career aspirations.

Connor Watt and Joe Housley tell us about their journey

We're two working class lads who have always wanted to have our own business but we were faced with the problem of being two poor students with no money. But we made no excuses. We started recording a podcast back in February as it required no money to set up and we're both avid fans of podcasts. We began recording a couple with just ourselves, but we knew we needed to upgrade our equipment and reach out to guests. We entered the Santander Enterprise competition in March and secured آ£250 seed funding which went on upgrading microphones and allowing us to buy a camera.

Subsequent to being successful in the competition we were fast tracked onto BSEEN where we then received another آ£500 which went on upgrading kit. We reached out to a number of academics at Aston with large profiles to guest. We recorded six podcasts with lecturers however May came and it was our final exams, university was almost over and we didn't want to go down the graduate job route and knew we needed something more commercial in the short term to generate income.

So, with our kit we had bought through prize winnings we took a right turn and went down the video production route. We used our networks and found a gap in the B2B space and started recording for a small number of clients. This then turned into more and more clients with us investing everything back into our business. We are now at a stage where we have cinema range cameras, high end lighting rigs, top of the range microphones and editing equipment. Our pipeline opportunities are every growing and we're looking at acquiring office space and hiring in the near future.
