    About

    The Russell School of Chemical Engineering at TU prepares undergraduate students to solve industrial problems through progressive coursework and rigorous design projects with optional research. Chemical engineering is a broad discipline, training individuals to use chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering for the advancement of mankind and solution of societal problems through technological innovation.

    Chemical engineers apply fundamentals of chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics to resolve issues associated with the use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food and other products. They design operation procedures and manufacturing equipment, test production methods and monitor product performance.

    The Russell School of Chemical Engineering curriculum provides fundamental knowledge in science, engineering and chemical engineering principles as well as chemical engineering practice, design and electives. Students may earn a bachelor of science, master of science or doctorate in chemical engineering.

    In addition to TU's general curriculum that offers the flexibility to choose coursework based on personal interests, students also can specialize in one of the following areas: refining, materials, environmental engineering, pre-med and business.

    Chemical Engineering Chemical engineering students begin their bachelor's degree with a broad base of chemistry, physics and mathematics to acquire engineering design tools. Students are educated to think critically about engineering design problems while considering the fundamentals of engineering and science to apply their skills in many industrial areas. Specializations are available in pre-med, business, refining, materials and environmental areas. Graduates work in a broad range of fields including alternative energy, biotechnology, chemicals, environmental engineering, materials, natural gas and petroleum. The TU chemical engineering experimental facilities and teaching laboratories are built around the industrial models of process control equipment and introduce the practical scenarios of professional engineering and graduate school settings.

    Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering

    Our Program Educational Objectives are to prepare graduates such that, within a few years of graduation, they have established chemical engineering careers in the petroleum, natural gas, chemicals, alternative energy, environmental, materials or biotechnology industries, and/or have begun graduate studies in chemical engineering or related fields such as medicine, law and business administration.

    To meet these educational objectives, students in the program will attain:

    1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
    2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
    3. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
    4. An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
    5. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
    6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
    7. An ability to communicate effectively
    8. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
    9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
    10. A knowledge of contemporary issues
    11. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice

    Entry Requirements

    Let’s start with your grade point average (GPA). Yale admissions officers will calculate based on your high school transcript, which you’ll submit with your overall application.

    Last year, the reported average high school GPA of an admitted student at Yale was a 4.19 out of 4.0, what we call a “weighted” GPA. However, unweighted GPAs are not very useful, because high schools weight GPAs differently. In truth, you need close to a 4.0 unweighted GPA to get into Yale. That means nearly straight As in every class.

    Yale, like the rest of the Ivy League and most other colleges, requires either the SAT or ACT for admission. They have no preference between them, so choose the test that’s a better fit for you, thoroughly prepare for it, and plan to take it multiple times.

    The average SAT and ACT composite scores for admitted students at Yale varies, as you can see in the table below. However, keep in mind that unless you fall into certain privileged categories (athletes, legacies, donors, etc.), your SAT/ACT score should be closer to the 75th percentile than the 25th percentile to ensure you’re maximizing your chances of admission.

    English Program Requirements

    TOEFL or IELTS is required of most applicants whose native language is not English.

    If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS

    No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g. M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.) from any institution.

    When you complete your application, you will answer questions about your native language and the primary language of instruction at your baccalaureate institution. If either was English, you will not be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when you submit your application. No separate documentation is necessary.
