    Chemistry

    About

Approved by the American Chemical Society, Sam Houston State University's chemistry program will give you a quality education in the fundamental knowledge of chemistry, including how to critically examine and analyze observations and how to use chemical understanding to propose solutions to problems that may arise in industry, academia, or various other careers associated with chemistry. You have the opportunity for hands-on experience in working with atomic absorption, gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy, 60 MHz and 300 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and other standard instrumentation in the field.

At SHSU, you can major in chemistry with a chosen track for professional chemists or other technical careers, along with the option to choose an emphasis in biochemistry-biotechnology. The professional chemists track leads to an American Chemical Society certification and prepare students for graduate studies in traditional chemical fields. Students interested in professional schools, chemistry-associated industries, or secondary education may pursue the technical careers track. With an emphasis in biochemistry-biotechnology, students are prepared for careers in biotech companies across the state and nation. A strong skill set in mathematics is strongly suggested for the chemistry program.
