    Chemistry with Computing

    About

Chemistry, the so-called "central science", allows us to gain a rich understanding of the world around us and becomes even more powerful when combined with modern computer technology and data science. BSc Chemistry with Computing enables you to build skills in both areas, developing an increasingly vital skillset for the modern laboratory.

Technological advances and dramatic increases in computer power have transformed the way we do chemistry, with computation playing an ever more important role in research and the chemical industry.

Our degree in Chemistry with Computing will not only provide a solid understanding of chemistry, but also teach how modern techniques in computational chemistry and data analysis can be put to optimal use to solve chemical problems – for example in materials design, in-silico drug development, and the analysis of large data sets.

As a student in Chemistry with Computing, you will be taught by experts in our highly respected departments of Chemistry and Computer Science. You will also enjoy access to our state-of-the-art facilities in STEMLab and high-quality computer labs.

Over the duration of the course you will study organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry and grow your practical laboratory skills, making use of the state-of-the-art facilities in our STEMLab. From the second year onwards you will learn computer programming and explore various techniques in modern computer-assisted chemistry.

As a student of chemistry at Loughborough you will benefit from high levels of pastoral support, a peer-mentoring scheme, and the compelling insights of our renowned academic staff, many of whom are active in research with far-reaching impact. You will also benefit from Loughboroughs expertise in computer science and enjoy access to excellent computing facilities.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Students taking the Tawjihi (General Secondary Education Certificate) will need to complete a suitable Foundation Year.

Loughborough University has its own Foundation Year for high-calibre international students who have successfully completed 12 years of school education. Alternatively, please contact the International Office to check if the Foundation Programme that you are considering taking is acceptable for entry to Loughborough courses.

Students with A Level or IB qualifications will be considered for direct entry to undergraduate degree courses. Please see the undergraduate prospectus for specific course requirements. Requirements for American SATs and APs can be found under the country requirements for USA.

Students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.

    English Program Requirements

The standard University IELTS English language requirement is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each individual element (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Some Schools/Departments may require higher levels of English language than those specified. The requirements needed, will be sent to you in your offer communication.

For Research Degrees, some Schools/Departments may ask for a higher standard of English language qualifications due to the nature of the research work involved. Details will be included in your offer letter if this applies.

For Undergraduate Degree courses, some Schools/Departments may require higher levels than those specified.  These higher levels are detailed, where relevant and more information can be found here.

English language tests should have been taken within the previous two years. Where a school-based qualification is used to meet the English language requirement, this should have been taken within the past ten years. Evidence of continuing use of English, whether in the workplace or elsewhere, in the intervening period may be considered as supporting evidence of English language ability where a qualification was taken more than ten years ago.

    How to Apply

    Register with UCAS

Before you can do anything, you will need to register with UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). This is the official application route for the majority of full-time undergraduate courses.

If you are at school or college, you will be given a buzzword which will associate your account with your institution. It will also allow your teacher to input their reference.

    The application consists of 6 sections, these include;

    • Section 1: Personal Details
    • Section 2: University Choices
    • Section 3: Formal Qualifications
    • Section 4: Employment History
    • Section 5: Personal Statement
    • Section 6: Reference

These sections can be completed in any order, but it’s important that before you submit your application each section is checked prior to submission, to ensure there are no mistakes.
